I’m not the expert in counterfeit detection or of CC Morgan’s, but it looks legit to me.

Thanks. I did look up some articles with regards to verification about the 1889 CC, and the main piece of advice I found was to look for tooling marks around the date and mintmark.

Does the placement of the mintmark look alright?

I feel like this is a setup... but nothing obviously fake jumps out to this hobbyist.

    I don't like it
    rim edge 9 to 10 o'clock obverse
funny die crack on 10th star
    funny angle on the CC

    don't think it is VAM5

look on the vam5 page for the mm photo Below The Slab Photos (doesn't have the black line cross)

note the ribbon is horizontal and the CC is slightly rotated. the op's coin is more rotated

I also didn't see the die cracks, but that could be due to the wear? I'm not sure.

Whenever one has the worn coin it makes things more difficult to me as far as features, lining up and things getting flattened. I tired to compare one of the VAM5 photos to the OP for the CC.

The coins are not rotated the same and again the OP coin features are not so distinct (and photo not as good) making it a little bit of guess on these lines. For some reason the OP CC visually appears rotated differently (I think maybe since it is rotated CW compared to the VAM5 photo and kicking up the first C) but when drawing the lines it appears to me to line up with the VAM5 example - well within the worn tolerances and stuff as noted. See below as others may differ on that. :)

For the vertical left and right I tried to follow the inside edge of the D and O. Can compare where they hit on the tail feathers and alignment with the CC.
The center vertical is parallel to the right one and tried to move it over so that it just touches the first C. Can compare how it aligns with other C and to the O and above.
The bottom horizontal I tried to follow the top of the D and O and intersect with the center of the L top sheriff. Can compare how it aligns with the CC.
The top horizontal I tried to follow the bottom of the inside of the ribbon. Can compare how it aligns with the CC and the outside of the ribbon.

PS - Didn't check the date as closely but the edge of the 1 appears between dentils and the 1 and 9 higher than 8's with more spacing between the 8's than the 18 or 89. So at least similar.

Looks legit from photos. $1500+ coin still in old cardboard holder? If buying online would need to trust seller and have good return policy. No apparent issues but never know in hand. Risk return shipping costs if there are issues but if price is right & original, nice gain over buying slabbed. Looks VF 30.

Looks okay to me - old tape residue and goofy Cc MM

The coin doesn't quite wow me ;) but it looks genuine.

I collect Morgans, but I don't consider myself anything like an expert on identifying counterfeits.

That said, (i) it looks genuine to me, and (ii) I cannot imagine buying a coin as expensive as this one would be, if it is legitimate, without it being certified by a good TPG.

It's on an auction right now. It's at a good price, I would even call it a steal.

never say that out loud because

    It's at a good price,

    not anymore

I would even call it a steal.

anyway, it hasn't ended and the bidding hasn't ended. you can't say that right now. and you can't say open auction right now either

I won't bid on it anyways. I was just wondering about the genuineness.

Apparently, I'm not the only one who wouldn't touch that coin, especially in eBay.

    Seller has no return policy.

  • HigashiyamaHigashiyama Posts: 2,279 ✭✭✭✭✭

Though I wouldn't personally buy it, the coin does look pretty convincing and perhaps problem free. I've seen rusty staples before, but these are quite dramatic. I wonder if the coin was dunked at some point?

Not to quibble with the seller, but I'd say it is closer to VF20 than VF25.

What happened to this seller's coins? Some of them appear to have been in a flood.

That feels about right unless there is a very serious impairment not visible in the photo.
