While going through some Mercs today I noticed this one that seems to have some pretty intense machine doubling around the date, motto, and first three letters of Liberty. Is this a commonly encountered error for this date?

That’s pretty cool MD on your coin. It’s not really particular to this date; I see similar MD fairly frequently on Mercs struck throughout the 20s.

  • It looks like DD to me.

Definitely not a doubled die. This is classic machine doubling.

Die deterioration. As the doubling wraps around the device. Machine doubling is flat and shelflike but directed towards one side.

Pretty cool Pete. If my memory serves me, I have seen it on this date, but yours is dramatic and those are good images too.
