Bust Halves Back From + Grade Reconsideration

Hit on 2/16 but the most expensive coin of the submission got a plus so I cannot really be that mad.

1839-O AU50 CAC ----> AU50+ CAC

1834 50c AU55 CAC ----> AU55+ CAC

Both NFS!

    Does the increase in value cover the cost of 16 submissions?

    Probably not

    The PCGS Price Guide increases are $125 and $250 respectively. While I regularly “play” the Reconsideration game to maximize value, the majority of coins I submit that I sense are undergraded have potentially higher dollar increases if I have success at getting a plus added on to a whole grade.

    Did you only ask for a + reconsideration or full grade reconsideration and they only gave you plus grades?
    Very nice coins.

    Very nice coins.

    Strictly plus grade reconsideration. All but two of the 16 coins were CAC and would rather have the sticker than the upgrade, if that makes sense. Since when a coin receives a plus the cert # does not change.

    Actually, no matter how high of an upgrade you get with Reconsideration, even a two grade upgrade, the cert number will still stay the same. Like you, I agree with your rationale of checking the plus grade only box, since if you get an upgrade to the next higher whole grade number, then the coin will NOT qualify for an automatic restickering at CAC, but instead will have to qualify at CAC as being solid for that new higher whole grade.

    So do you have to send back to CAC for replacement stickers? or will you just remember?

    While I cannot answer for @levinerarecoin, I strongly suggest everyone in this situation send their upgraded coins back to CAC in NJ for automatic restickering. One never knows when "their time has come", and despite information provided to heirs, there's a real chance the stickers or that information may not make it to the ultimate potential buyers. As such, in my opinion, incur the shipping, small restickering fees, and small (but real) risk of shipping loss in order to help get fair value for when the time comes to sell.

    Separately, who knows how long CAC stickering will continue to do that task? For those collectors waiting to either getting coins restickered, or more likely the large group of collectors who claim they'll submit their coins to CAC stickering just before selling, good luck getting fair value if CAC stickering is no longer providing that service! While I strongly believe CAC Grading will be a very long term participant as a TPG, there has always been "talk" of a time that CAC will stop the stickering function.

    The 39-O seems really nice for a mere 50+ grade. Are there slight surface problems holding the grade back?

  • lilolmelilolme Posts: 2,782 ✭✭✭✭✭

    From CAC website. This is similar to what a cac grader told me several plus years ago. I suspect the approval percentage could be stated as very high.

    They are 100% going back to CAC to get their stickers. Sucks because I have to pay for the express service, but I've already invested so much so I feel its worth it to finally get the coin into its forever holder.

    Make sure you only pay for the Express Resticker service ($25), and NOT the Express Sticker service ($68)!!!! Separately, the Express level is only needed for coins that exceed $3,000 in value (but no more than $10,000). At that lower value level of less than $3,000 for the coin, the Resticker fee is only $5.
