Just Received An ebay Offer From A Seller For $145 Off Of A $545 Listing

Have you ever put a coin on your watchlist or simply opened the listing and then received an offer from the seller? It seems to me that more times than not I get an offer of $2 off for a $40 coin or $5 off something listed for $100. Today, however, I looked at a coin on ebay and subsequently received a $145 discount offer from the $545 listed price. I can't say I'd hop on the BIN, though, because the seller does not offer returns. The cert number checks out so I don't think this is a fake PCGS cert or a counterfeit coin.
Here is the $545 ($400 to me!) coin in question-

a sad day for the further decline of ebay
Cannot believe that you were able to resist pulling the trigger with that discount.

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.

Did you counter?
I often get discounts offers, sometimes substantial, if I even hesitate and look at some sellers coins on eBay. One seller of civil war tokens that I actually buy from always gives me a substantial discount offer if I either click on the coin to get a better look or if I put any of his coins on my watch list. It’s his M.O. and he typically offers about 25% less than the auction amount.

If you want, I will give you the ebay link for this dime so you can buy it at about 27% off the listed price. Just sayin'.

Nah, I’ll pass. But the civil war token sellers coins are often very nice and in line with other sellers that are offering similar coins.

That’s a … curious coin to submit for grading.
Opportunity is knocking loudly here, Tom -- don't hesitate!!!
this is what happens when you are uneducated and probably got some get rich quick ideas
you have to wonder if they'll find out what tuition was paid. most get rich quick people on ebay just overprice their stuff without grading
Why don't you make a counteroffer of $2.
Yet another seller from that alternate universe where the evil Captain Kirk lives. I'm more struck by the fact that PCGS straight-graded that coin. Seriously, is anyone else surprised by this?
Population of 9 in that grade so others have submitted these before! And it is far from being a lowball with VG 8 being the lowest for the date/mintmark combo.
OH my! The grading fees are more than the coin is worth!!!!
I would snap it up in an instant . . . but the spots on the obverse kill it for me.

I agree. Not my series but those black spots are atrocious. I wonder if that is something the coin doctor people can fix. james
I had to check to see if there was a variety they thought they had. I figure a $3 coin, but it has a PCGS price guide value of $5 with True View.
Cost more to slab the coin than it is worth. I find things like this entertaining.
Tom, I'd respond to the offer with Sí hombre, ¡una polla como una olla! It doesn't translate into English exactly, but it's a crude response when someone says something incredibly stupid.
"Seu cabra da peste,
"Sou Mangueira......."
Pass -his crummy photo even hides the slab number.
If bad vibes - run.
Don't do business with folks like this..
I wonder if someone said it's worth "five forty five" meaning five dollars and forty five cents, and the seller thought something completely different... just a WAG..

I actually received an eBay offer on a contemporary counterfeit I was interested in, bought it and had the seller cancel the purchase and said he didn't authorize it...
To answer your first question, I would estimate I get price reduction offers on 30 - 40% of the coins I watch. Not often that I've receive the type of discount you received but it can be a good strategy for BIN auctions without a "make an offer" option and can lead to a series of offers/counter-offers that result in a purchase.
