Worthless mint coins??

Hi, new to this site and PCGS. I bought some coins and other items that included two envelopes from the 1968 Philadelphia Mint and one envelope from the 1969 Philadelphia Mint. So the Quarters, dimes and 1 penny in each clear sealed plastic package NO Mint Mark (normal correct?) But also each nickel in all three packages is a "S" mint with date and another penny included in package is also a "S" mint mark with date. Is this normal? Or are these, (each package of 5 coins) of any greater value because of the coins with "S"stamped. i think there was a shortage of coins?? I may have read that or did I pull that out of my as? Looking for some information and i know i'm in the right form I could not find any information about this

Welcome. First thing is to read the mint packaging. Does it say uncirculated or proof? Our host has a coinfacts site, where you can learn much about US minted coins and their variants. You should consider purchasing the current Redbook, which contains data on US mint coin sets. Good luck. Peace Roy

Sounds like you have uncirculated mint sets like the one below and by your description, they are normal sets. You can check ebay sold listings for approximate value.

if you give them to grandson, they will be worth a lot

as you can see in the redbook, condition drives value. if they are really high end then they will be worth a little something

i'll encourage you to consult the redbook on which have mintmarks.

i will note for the cameo explanation the coins with the S mintmark are proof. these in higher grades are worth a little something. from the earlier time periods, there is a different levels of frosting on the devices and mirrors on the fields. this is generally cameo contrast. the best cameo contrast is called deep cameo. it'll have deep mirrors and lots of frosting. coins with no to poor mirrors and/or no to poor frosting do not get a cameo designation. in between is just called cameo. it's really hard to describe in between, you really need to look at pics of all 3 to get an idea

you can get jumbo pics and more from pcgs' coinfacts. https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/ - the price guide is iffy and the auction results are automated and sometimes pull incorrect auctions

keep in mid bothe the price guide and the values in the redbook are not updated in real time. the redbook is published 1x a year

if you want to get an idea of pricing go to auction site and look at sold prices for them. don't look at ebay numbers for active listings. there are many sellers on ebay that offer coins worth a tiny for big money. useless.

big auction sites - ebay (if you can tolerate wading through junk and overpriced items, and counterfeits) - greatcollections, heritage auctions, stacks bowers

=> before you get anything graded, ask us first <=

    enjoy!

(if you don't mind getting your hands dirty and spending some not insignificant time, go to the bank and get a $200 box of nickels. you can fill many holes in a whitman coin albums that way. though first you'll need a plan to get rid of almost $200 in nickels. the providing bank won't want them back unless they have a coin machine)

The quality of the coins in Mint Sets from the 1980s was often very low. The only premium for many of those sets would come from the fact the coins are in mint packaging and nothing more.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
