FYI Notification: Missing/Stolen 1882-O PCGS MS67+ CAC from USPS Express Mail Package

The owner approved this posting and if the board moderator can maybe delete and convert this post into their own notification it is even better. This coin was stolen recently from a USPS express mail package. Tracking showed it for a prolonged period in the southern Calif. area and when it showed up it was apparent someone had used a razor to delicately slice into both the outside and inside boxes to remove the coin and reseal. If anyone sees this coin somewhere then please contact Steve at 303-912-0027.
Thank you

Carefully slicing open both the exterior and interior boxes followed by carefully resealing the package points to more USPS employee theft.

You can also let Steve know about the below link for reporting.

Another to consider is contacting PCGS and see about getting the cert number deactivated. However, leaving the NFC chip active could help. If it is scanned then PCGS would know and could relay the information. I don't know what it takes to get PCGS to do this (police report, USPS report or other).

My 1898-O 65PL CAC in RATTLER shipped from Rinkor was also stolen by USPS in September of 2023. Stolen in Freemont CA and fully refunded by Rinkor immediately. Maybe we need Singapore law implemented here.

The PCGS Cert app on an iPhone does not contain any personally-identifiable information. The app does capture NFC scans, and yes, it’s possible that PCGS can see the scans, along with the type of device being used and a rough indication of location (if you’ve allowed the app to access your location data). But the scans won’t identify a specific person or place.

    Anyone have a different understanding?

I do not know what information from an NFC scan PCGS can see and thus the 'relay the information'. This may also differ depending on if one is using the APP or is using the phone NFC/contactless payments and a web browser. However, on the set registry forum it has been stated that one can get their cert numbers 'released' and into their 'possession' by scanning the NFC with the APP. Link below. Anyway the point was to get the cert number deactivate but possibly keep the chip active so if it was scanned any possible information could be forwarded.

EDIT: Checking my Android phone and the PCGS APP permission there are no request for location (UBER has a request for location and more which can be allowed or denied). The Registry Set is probably working off of being logged into the PCGS system and thus knowing whom is requesting. So if it was scanned by someone logged in that could possibly relay additional information.

From the PCGS page when a chip is scanned it sends a revolving code to (cloud, pcgs or where ever) and that revolving code is confirmed, chip/slab identified, and the information sent back to the known requesting device. How long this inform is retained (a second, day or an entire history or other) I do not know. But the request is received and sent back.

I will also note that whatever information is available I don't know if PCGS could legally transfer the information (again may be dependent upon if police report or other) or would even want to get involved with the resources to do so.

Yesterday, the PCGS cert verification page for #50623059 worked. Today, it does not. :)

FWIW, as of five minutes ago, the CAC sticker verification was still working.
