Post A Picture of Your Favorite Numismatist

My Favorite Numismatist was David Akers. Although I never met him, he was a true Gentleman in this business. Not only did he write Amazing Books on Gold, but his Auction Cataloging Skills were also some of the best.

Yeah, I've seen some pictures here that I did not recognize, and I've been around for a while.
I learned so much from my mentor Emery May Holden Norweb when I met her at our mutual bank safe deposit vault rooms in Cleveland, Ohio back in 1972 through 1976. She showed me her entire coin collection.
I was lucky enough to acquire the very first coin Emery ever owned which is a 1795 $10 US gold coin with a hole on top which was a gift from her father Liberty Holden.
I still own her and her son’s famous Canada 1875-H Specimen (British Heaton Mint) trio of OGH PCGS slabbed 25c, 10c and 5c coins also approved by ICCS. These coin have not been auctioned since the early 1990’s.
Interesting tidbit about Emery. She never spent her monies on eating out for lunch. She always brown bagged with her husband Ambassador Henry Norweb including their coffee from a thermos bottle in Cleveland Public Square in downtown Cleveland.

Consider an edit(s) done, good suggestion.
Your initial post shows “edited” but still doesn’t include a caption.

He added a pic of a M1911 .45 Auto pistol which was Ricko's avatar.

Rev. Dr. James G. K. McClure had a tremendous old time collection with many coins acquired at the time of issue, going all the way back to the 1860s. They were stored in a bank vault
in Lake Forest, Illinois since 1932 the year he passed away.

This very wealthy and prominent family simply did not need the money, so they kept the coins until 2016 when they were put up for auction at Heritage.
Proof once again: A leopard doesn't change its spots.
Maywood is as constroversial now, seeking troll level status attention, as he was before being banned as keets.
@keets / @Maywood clearly venerates the "Numismatic Scholar of the 20th Century". What could be controversial about him sharing his adoration of such a figure?
I don't think this guy needs a caption...

@DisneyFan . That was a great auction to follow but I really wonder how many of those coins found their way into a coin dip. Hundreds of very original but near terminal dark coins. At least that is how i remember it. James

"What in tarnation?"
Some Interesting bio pages from that 1987 US catalog along with a page of his interest from the world and ancient catalog.
Also only a relatively few coins in the sale belonged to Buddy Ebsen and Superior did not note which ones were his. Most belonged to other consignors. So it can be hard or impossible to pedigree his coins to him other than what can be figured out from the bio info. His name was used for promoting the entire sale which was a common practice at the time.

Elvira Clain-Stefanelli
Elvira Clain-Stefanelli wasn't just another numismatist in the pages of history; she was a storyteller. To her, every coin held a tale, a glimpse of a bygone era, a narrative waiting to be told. Born in Romania, her initial years of exposure to numismatics were in Europe
The Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History houses one of the most significant numismatic collections globally. And do you know who played an integral role in its curation? Elvira Clain-Stefanelli. Her role at the Smithsonian wasn't just administrative; she actively expanded the collection, ensuring it reflected diverse cultures and eras, turning it into a numismatic treasure trove.
Furthermore, her intellectual contribution to the world of numismatics is encapsulated in her masterwork, "Select Numismatic Bibliography." This isn’t just a list; it's a guide, a compendium of essential numismatic resources that scholars and enthusiasts have relied upon for years. How many can truly claim to have impacted the academic world to such a profound extent?
Behind many great individuals is a partnership, a symbiosis of minds and ideas. For Elvira, this partnership was with her husband, Vladimir Clain-Stefanelli. Together, this powerhouse couple worked tirelessly, significantly expanding the National Numismatic Collection, bridging gaps, and curating a collection that truly stands as a testament to world history.
But Elvira's legacy isn't confined to just tangible coins. Her writings, diligently researched and articulately penned, are akin to gospel in numismatic circles. Why? Because they aren't mere observations; they're a blend of history, culture, and numismatics, making them a beacon for anyone venturing into the realm of coin collecting. Years might have passed since her demise, but the echoes of her contributions still reverberate in every coin enthusiast's heart and the hallowed halls of institutions she touched.

Roger W. Burdette
The Numismatist of the Year award recognizes collectors at the regional and/or national level who have demonstrated outstanding leadership within the hobby and the ANA.
The 2023 recipient is longtime collector and former Citizen’s Coinage Advisory Committee member Roger W. Burdette.
Burdette started collecting by filling holes in coin folders with pocket change and searching coin rolls. In the 1970s, he pioneered accurate, high-quality photography. By the 1990s, he was specializing in numismatic research and writing, which led to his discovery of several U.S. pattern pieces. A prolific author, he has published over 90 research articles, contributed to publications such as The Numismatist, Coin World, and CoinWeek, and written several books, including the three-part Renaissance of American Coinage series and A Guide Book of Peace Dollars. Burdette is a member of the Rittenhouse Society and was on Coin World’s 2021 list of the Most Influential People in Numismatics.
and my Mentor on my book project. He helps everyone who asks.
I came away with the impression that his IMHO awkward expert testimony lost the Langbord case, which still bugs me, but I need to get past that emotionally
I never noticed that the auctions weren't all Ebsen. Amazing runs of gold and the other guy's platinum. My favorite though was that sweet 1802 half dime.

I have 17 books with Q. David Bowers on them. I am going to take that as a clue. James
By the way, this is a great thread, gives me a few more Numismatics to explore down the road…
