Now that Lincoln Cents will be no more, anyone thinking of putting that set together in some form?

It's a pretty seismic event in our field for something that's always been there to pass into history. I've started the set a couple of times over the years in higher end form, only to abandon my efforts. Does this affect your view of the set? Lots of old whittman circulated sets out there in various stages of completion and in every variety of condition. Is it a set that you're taking a second look at now that it has an end?

The mint is not going to get rid of them entirely. They will continue in mint sets and probably rolls. Congress will have to eliminate them for the to go 100% away.

Yes, history suggests that elimination can be gradual but eventually final. E.g. the 3c silver: significantly reduced minting for circulation in the early 60’s, then minted proofs only in 1873, and eliminated by Congress in 1873. Others come to mind.

At this point all that we know is that production has been halted, there has been no legislation introduced so far that would eliminate the cent. Until or unless legislation is passed to address the issue of rounding and eliminate the denomination of one cent, there will be no changes right now. And as we have seen the courts have been very busy stopping the current presidents' efforts which could also happen with this order. And if the cent is eliminated by legislation, then it would no longer be produced for collectors as in mint, proof sets, or in rolls.

As to the op's question I hope the interest goes thru the roof so I can sell my dups for moon money!

Here is the issue I see arising. In theory, state and local sales tax would be rounded to the nearest 5 cent. In theory. My state, Pennsylvania, is 6%. Lowering it 1% would create a loss for the state while raising it 4% would bring such a public outcry destroying any proponents political career. So what do the states do at this point? My thoughts are a fast track composition change, something they have been studying for decades but drug their feet on. What that might be is anyone's guess, but I doubt copper will used.

There is no reason to round the sales tax at all. Change is made in the total bill not just the sales tax.

You're also assumimg sales tax on a single dollar. 6% of $20 is $1.20 which requires no rounding at all. And $19.99 + $1.20 gives a total bill of $21.19 which requires rounding of a single cent up or, if you prefer, by 4 cents down... or not at all if you use a credit card.

This is a moot point. Many states have tax rates that are not whole number percentages. Take for example Connecticut, which has a 6.35% sales tax. The state survives without coinage issued to reflect the hundredths position and it will survive at the current tax rate without a cent being produced.

If you can pick up full sets (minus the 09-S VDB) at the cost this listing sold for I don't think you can go wrong.

Who wants a full set of copper coated zincs that will just degrade over the years? There's enough Lincoln Cents in circulation that you will never see the day where you can't collect them. You just will have to stop your set at 2025.

With a little looking, those on a tight budget can collect a complete major design set from circulation for seven cents.

I am not looking forward to the hoarding and price gouging of the 2025's when they are released. But I guess thats what people do.

I have a mostly complete set (raw, mostly circulated) of 1909-1995 minus keys and some proofs so I’m good. Have a bucket of old wheaties. Maybe they’ll finally be worth selling before too long…

Wheats have never been higher. They are $250 per bag.

I don't do zinc and my Lincoln penny collection is comprised of all business strike issues 1909-1974. I cut my collection off at 1974.1975 marked the first year of production of over five billion pennies by the Mint.

The Philadelphia mint produced 5,451,476,142 pennies in 1975.

I’ve put three Wheat sets together over the years. Sold them all through the years along with other series. Type only last several years. Tempting tho. First love, Lincolns.

Part of me thinks there’s a quadrillion of them and they’ll never go away, but where are all the wheat cents in circulation? By the. mid 1980s when I started collecting wheat cents were hard to find in change. Hard to believe that many cents disappeared in just 25 years but I kind of felt the same about the Buffalo nickel.

I already have 2 full sets of Lincoln cents and a set of Indian Head cents so I’m good.
