Just unloaded about $25 in Coinstar in local grocery store. They took about 19 or 20% fee. Is this average now? I thought it was 9% last time I checked. And it kick back one dime that I saw now problem with, so I saved two cents.

My recommendation: Find a bank that has an automatic coin sorter. Become a member and you should be able to avoid the fee. (If you have to do this often)

My CU does it for 2-3 % sometimes as a promo, I just thought 20% was ridiculous. Won’t do it again, thanks.
I thought the fee was 12.9% and a ,59 cent transaction fee Safeway in N California.
You can deposit the change self service checkout machines and get full value.
Two of my credit unions are free unlimited, the other one is free up to $99.99 and 10% above that.
I go to the bank rolling machine there. If not I'll roll it up by hand, banksters get enough as it is 😡
(edited for spelling)
Thanks All !
All I have ever seen is 10% fee on coinstars, with a 0% fee if you process the funds onto affiliate gift cards. I have only seen a free to use coin counter in a bank once (out of state).

Most coinstars will do it "no fee" if you choose one of the gift card options.

Not accurate.
All Coinstar locations charge 11.9% with a few adding a percent to top out at 12.9%. The OP either is exaggerating his claim or his math is off. NO Coinstar charges "19 or 20%".
Could it be a another company's machine that he is generically calling a Coinstar?
In any case, I guess I'm lucky t8 have two banks (each with multiple branches) where the coin machines are free for customers.
Don’t they offer Amazon gift cards? They’re just as good as cash, to me at least.

Just picked up a 1964 quarter and a 1954 Rosevelt dime in the rejected slot today - first time a couple years.
I only go to Coinstar to check out the reject slot. My change goes to a local bank that rather not have rolled coins. They say that they just need to unwrap them to count the coins. I just bring a mint bag of coins and give them to the teller. No fee.

Less and less of these around (at least in my hood).
Too many people put in foreign coins (I'm in a heavy immigrant area) and machines would have problems and break down. So, they just pulled the machines altogether.
Some banks have gone back to only taking coins in wrappers, with information on it.

My bank takes all of my rolled change (and has free rollers for do it myself) but they really lost it today when I asked to order $500 in cents. I reminded them that I have a business account and run a large balance that will go to another bank if they cannot do this one simple thing. Moronic Capital One Bank.
I wouldn't want to do it either. They are spending money to support your hobby.
I used to get Amazon cards all the time. Now, all the machines near me do not offer them anymore. Best I can do is a Lowes gift card.

No Fees for me at my Inspire Credit Union since I am a member.

20% is ridiculous.
Did you get a receipt?
Post it up if you did.
When I get loose coins I spend them in the self checkout at Walmart. Sometimes it takes a while when I have several dollars in coin but no percentage loss makes it worth the effort.
The self checkout machine gets my quarters from my failed attempts to find these elusive wquarters.
Stilll have not found one like most.

My credit union does it for free for members. Don't know how much they charge nonmembers. The local supermarket charges about 12 1/2%.
boy am I ever out of touch. I have never used or even looked at one of these change machines, but I have never paid for change counting in my entire life. Never even occurred to me. I have had a personal or business (or both) account since i was 13. James
