Second chance coins (semi-key PL Morgan upgrade)

There are a few coins in my collection where I was outbid (or otherwise missed) at auction the first time around and eventually had another chance to acquire the coin. Here’s the newest addition to my collection, which I was eagerly watching and yet somehow forgot to bid in time (I didn’t realize it was in the first sale). I was disappointed to realize that I would have happily paid the sale price, (knowing of course that it might have required several more bids). Anyway, I purchased it from a dealer and who knows - I might not have won it at this price the first time!

Nice. In the past I found the 85 S could be found 'flashy' or semi-PL and with decent/good contrast. But the fully PL was tough as there was a weak area or just not deep enough overall.

Congrats on a very attractive coin!
I just received this newp a week ago.
The 74-P is incredibly difficult chopmarked. There are currently 19 numerically graded examples; this one is pop 2/2. I missed this coin at Heritage ~18 months ago in an NGC holder. I missed it again a year ago after it crossed to this 58 holder. In that time frame I saw one other indisputable 74-P which was hideous and two other hideous coins which were likely 74-S with obscured mintmark.
So I swallowed my pride and ponied up big time for this one. First time I've ever gone back and bought a coin I lost at a prior auction.

....I did not win when it came up in 2023; in 2024 I was determined to get it and was successful (for a little less than it brought the first time!).
After mrhalfdime passed, his collection was sold by W. David Perkins. I couldn't get all I wanted at the time, but later noticed some of the coins showing up on ebay. Here is one such coin I purchased. 1849 V-5.

I once sold my 1917 Type I SLQ in a moment of financial dispare on a Saturday and contacted the buyer, before he could post it on his website, and bought it back after an unexpected sale on Monday.

Great coin David! Tough date to find with a good look.
A good friend was parting with some of his bust halves at the ANA, and I saw a very smooth 1809 O-115 that I thought was purdy. Couldn't get myself to pull the trigger on it, and he sold it to a dealer. I dreamt about the coin that night (I know... super weird), and woke up knowing I had to buy the coin from the dealer. We made a deal at his table and I even got a great deal, worked out for the best.

Great looking 85-S. Nice frost on devices and almost looks DMPL in photo. Strong strike and detail in hair for a date not known for a great strike.
First time around this went for stupid money ($12k) by what I can only assume was 2 people bidding it up who were assuming it would upgrade. A couple months later it was relisted and I got it for a reasonable price. Gorgeous coin, very happy with it.

Thanks for sharing those stories of when you had another shot and were determined to take it! As we roll into Toner Tuesday, here’s one where I was outbid at auction but the collector sold it again through Legend maybe a year later. I was lucky enough to save several thousand.
@david3142 Funny how we see a pattern developing... things are usually cheaper the second time!

I picked an example that was like that but I have several that went the other direction.
This one was about $120 more when I got my second chance (plus grading fees at PCGS).

You know what... I have one too😬😢
This lady I missed the first time and paid double for it after months of searching platforms for a relisting. Finally had found it on a scrappy hibid type website. But... I think it may be the highest grade inverted edge, but that probably means nothing to everyone.
Edge lettering has FIFTY CENTS OR upright, and HALF A DOLLAR upside down. Photos below only show the transitions to see the flip.
