Thank yous to Heritage

MarkMark Posts: 3,546 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have several thank yous for Heritage:

  • Heritage sent me a very nice copy of the book "100 Greatest Coins."
  • In their last Signature auction I won two coins and paid only about 70% of my maximum bids.
  • Heritage shipped the coins to me before submitted payment.
  • If not for last week's lousy weather, I would have received the coins only two days after winning the second.

I appreciate the book, the fact that I feel safe about not having the bids run up to my maximum, and the very rapid shipping. And, frankly, I am a relatively small fish in Heritage's pond of buyers.

Mark

I would imagine that a certain dollar amount would need to be won prior to receiving the book.

No book for me. Also, my recent wins (mostly $3-4k) have been sent via FedEx Ground instead of Express as used to be the norm.

    I think I've been demoted.

This is kind of an interesting post because I almost feel like this is a tale of 2 companies. Last coin I won from heritage several months ago, they lost it, and it took over 40 days to get a refund. Guess I shouldn’t be overly surprised because they’ve lost coins I’ve won previously as well, but nothing ever gets better with that auction house.

I’m not angry with heritage, but strongly disappointed. Maybe they hate me personally, and jump through hoops to make my purchases extremely difficult, and I’m fine with that. I don’t expect to do any further business with that company, but I find it fascinating that no one else here experiences the same poor business practices I have had with them.

I was wondering what HA sent me. I guess that's what's arriving tomorrow!

I'll extend another thanks to HA but directly to @MFeld who (on more than this occasion) previewed coins for me and lead to my latest acquisition at the Signature auction which I may post about at some point. Of course, I haven't received the coin yet, but I appreciate having a hands-on assessment and that extra info.

Thanks for the clarification, but I don’t find it odd at all that all others posting so far have not experienced what you have. What I find odd are your experiences! With that said, I have indeed read some complaints about Heritage getting around to shipping coins too slow.

I’ve been dealing with Heritage for well over 10 years, having bought hundreds of coins from them. Most recently was from their FUN auctions having ended a week ago. I made my payment last Sunday night online via eCheck. I called them Monday morning, MLK Day, they were working, and they shipped my package the same day via FedEx, and I received it Tuesday, all in good order!!!

Wow, that's great! Unfortunately for me tey put a 10 day hold on my echeck payment. Wish I had known that or I would have Fedex'd a bank check. It might have been the size of my echeck, but I emailed them after the funds left my account and they let me know their system does it automatically and there was no way to speed it up. :|

Heritage is hit and miss on shipping. They seem to ship right away on bank wires and smaller e-checks, but hold payment on unusually large purchases.

Think like a business: they must estimate your creditworthiness based on past purchase amounts and multiply by dollar amount to decide when to ship.

you might not be alone. I bought 312 times from HA (312 invoices, 4 to 5 figures for each invoice) in the past. I have never received any gift from HA and they always ship my order in 2 to 4 weeks. They always send me email for review which I always delete. HA used to be a very good company but not any more. However, I still buy from them monthly because they are still OK but just not great to me. I used to buy weekly but now I try my best to reduce it to monthly.

I started a thread in March of 2023 questioning how long it took Heritage to ship an auction win. Had bought regularly
from them for many years. No longer deal with them. You're far from alone.

once in a while it happened to me but it doesn't mean much because if it happens all the times that will mean you always overbid. That might also explain why you get a gift unless you consign with them all the times. There is no free lunch.

Heritage shipped the coins to me before submitted payment.

only happened to me in very limited times because I always pay fast and HA always ship in 2 to 4 weeks to me.

SB does send me gift every year. Thank you SB. SB always ship fast to me. I always pay the same day or next day to both SB and HA.

My copy arrived today. They must have done a scan of the list to see who to accept into the Legacy tier. I've been a long time customer with dozens of decent 4 figure purchases but my Signature Auction win was the price of a new car. I also did a small $5k minimum consignment last year, maybe that helped too.

As a plus I was able to get the 10-day payment hold released early and my coin is on the way!

Would it be easier to just send a wire at that point? Even with a cashier's check I think it may be subject to a hold. In my experience, they ship the quickest with wires. Of course, If you bank with a small credit union or local bank this might be a pita. Chase makes it very convenient, my credit union not so much.

I don't think shipment is based on payment. I always paid the same day or next day but they always ship my item in 2 to 4 weeks. HA always told me that I am on priority list and will ship fast. I also don't think they hold my payment. I am pretty sure if you pay in credit card or echeck they will consider payment is done. This is what HA stated on every my invoice: "To expedite shipment (as appreciation of your established loyalty), this invoice will be shipped on Open Account, without waiting to confirm payment. Please allow 7-14 days to ship the items you won."

I think my bank charges $40 or $50 for a wire and they are a pain. Fedex 2 day is like $12.
But now that I am Legacy status I don't think it'll be an issue any more. They released the hold a few days early (after asking) and coin arrived today.

Ok. I wanted to make a more accurate statement about HA shipping time. My previous statement was based on my past impression which might not be correct because HA might has improve their shipping lately. So I checked my order that still has tracking available. Below are the invoice date and shipping date. It is less than two weeks. HA did improve the shipping speed a lot.

    invoice date 12-22-24. ship 1-8-2025
    invoice date 12-16-24, ship 12-23-24
    invoice date Dec 15, 2024 ship 12-17-2024
    invoice date Dec 8, 2024 ship 12-30-2024
    invoice date Oct 10, 2024 ship 10-12-2024
    invoice date Sep 28, 2024 ship 10-3-2024
    invoice date Sep 17, 2024 ship 9-25-2024 and 10-11-2024

I think there are a lot of factors like how many auctions and how big the auctions and how much they have to ship at any one time, as well as sometimes I think the coins have to be relocated (shipped) from another location before shipping out to customers. Like you, sometime things would ship fast, other times 2 weeks-ish. So that answer is just that "it depends."
