Skenes 1/1 RC patch

I saw this story last night. I'm glad an 11 year old kid got it from a pack more than anything else here.

https://www.si.com/mlb/highly-coveted-paul-skenes-rookie-card-found-young-fan-months-long-search

I think the Pirates should give him the "godfather" deal and let him keep the card.

Pirates Executives: Son, we're willing to give you a very nice package of goodies if you hand over the card to Mr. Skenes. He really, really, REALLY wants to own it.

Kid: And I would like a plane, a private villa, a Tesla and some companions please.

    Pirates Executives: You're ELEVEN! :#

All is fair in love and war and third party grading.

You're right. It's probably going to be a greedy grab but... I can hope.

I’d auction the card, Skenes or the Pirates want it that bad it will go for a huge number. Invest that amount in the SP500, drawdown 1-3% to cover the seats. In 30 years your 1-2Mm is 10-20MM.

    That math actually works fwiw.

I assume now box chasing will subside somewhat now that the " cat, (card), is out of the bag".
Be interesting to see what the collector settles for, and if his parents will coach him on his decision.

The funny thing is Skenes probably cant afford it with his rookie salary. I hope the kid doesn't feel pressured to turn it over. He can sell it, have his parents invest the money wisely in the right kind of tech energy AI stocks and maybe by the time he is 18 or 21 he is a multi-millionaire. Season tickets and some signed jersey and bat and a handshake from a swell pitcher with a great mustache aren't even in the ballpark, no pun intended.

Excited. Didn’t buy any update chrome because box prices were stupid. Now I can buy my one box to open like usual. Bottom is going to drop out on these!! And so happy a kid got it. Hope the parents let him keep the money in his name. Pay for his college and let him go to a card show with a few grand and have fun.

I would sell it as fast as I could before Skenes and the card value go bust.

Wonder how the IRS may figure into this. If this results into a cash windfall or a tax on the value of what he may turn the card into. Might be wise to check with a lawyer as they proceed. This is now public knowledge so the IRS is most likely aware.

Isn’t it amazing that the Pirates will pay up to invest in Paul Skenes the card but not Paul Skenes the player?

Wonder how many dealers, show tables, and card shops will pretend card was never found? Then if questioned get belligerent and deny deny deny. Just to reel at higher pricepoints those not yet in the know

BTWs I witnessed it at a local card shop late yesterday!

In many cases yes but some have the smarts to make long term choices to make their lives easier and this kid has such a chance now in his life. Me I was not smart with money when I was young.

Kind of hilarious if he found it scanning. Sad too.

Sounds as if these guys know the deal and aren't playing around and entertaining any offers. Heard Livvy Dunne was going to throw in a million.

But they graded it with PSA and it got 10 on the card 10 on the auto and it was submitted to Fanatics for auction.

I was happy when I thought it was a kid finding it.

Then when I’m hearing, here, that he’s a son of a breaker and they scanned it. Took the fun out of it. I thought it was cool if a kid got it from a random pack and it was a life changing experience.

Not sure what I said against humanity.

The report that it was being auctioned for charity came out after I posted that.

I get what everybody is feeling. Its very cool that Fanatics is donating their cut to charity and helping with the issues in LA. But how the kid got the card, I agree that is no fun. Feels like cheating. Nothing that says you cant do it that way. But think we all wanted to hear some kid who loves baseball bought four packs and was lucky and won the lottery, not his dad bought cases and scanned them to learn he had the lottery ticket in this box and knew the other boxes sucked and sold them to others who did not have the knowledge they were pure crud.

If that is what happened feel like its a bad day for the hobby. Not like I am buying cases for case hits and 1/1s or /5s. Still I just dont think its a great place for the hobby to be in, especially with all our other complaints about the state of the hobby with Mint cards being 7s. Or NM-MT cards being 5s.

I stopped purchasing new packs a long while back. Felt it was akin to gambling.

I apologize as it's only a portion of Fanatics haul that will go to charity. Also appears to be someone with CT tech "cheating" . Glad I have zero interests from cards from this century!

If they cheated , then it would be nice if no one bids. I would think that if this happened then Fanatics makes a donation on their own.

Trading card people love shady and even outright criminal. Remember Maestro was cheered, welcomed and embraced when he returned to the first national he was permitted to attend.

Always risky buying potential future HOFs. Being a pitcher...Skenes could hurt his arm, then it could be another Gregg Jefferies story.

Yeah, betting on pitchers to be HoF caliber after 1 season is a crazy bet.

Thing is even if dude had a HOF career the card will still lose most of the FMV. Mike Trout anyone?

Sucker bet for purchaser no matter how things pan out

Where are you getting this information. There was some initial talk of being the son of a breaker then the "journal entry" was posted by Topps which said it was one hobby box.

There's 44 pages of conspiracy theories on the BO forums but I don't recall reading the CT scanner allegation. The released journal entry is very suspect to say the least.
