Which coin do you like the most?

I'm having one of those "good problems". Specifically 3 examples of an 1805/4 Mexico 8 Reales overdate variety. Yonaka cataloged it as "rare" with 5 die pairs and 8 examples observed. However in my own archives I have documented close to 20 examples over the years with a few being MS, so I see it as a more common variety. Having said that, Over the last year I've picked up a couple of decent unattributed examples in addition to an AU58 PCGS I've had in the collection for a while that came to me from Katz of all the places back in 2019.

Here are the 3 coins - let me know your favorite! (and why, if you have a minute)

  1. NGC MS62 from the recent Tauler y Fau sale (P.S. liking those Photo Vision shots)

  2. PCGS AU58 from Katz with a small partial edge clip

  3. PCGS AU55 from Stacks

Which coin do you like the most?

    Which two are you seeing?

I am now seeing the NGC as the first coin and now it is the only coin. The other that was up and is now gone had some color across the date- looks attractive.

It's odd that the TV links were not working. I've re-uploaded the PCGS coin images. Should work now.

    I see all three.

I prefer coin number one, as it has, in my opinion, a better strike and has uniformity of tone.

With that said, this is a choice between coins each exhibiting the 1805/4 variety and if the priority is to keep the coin that best displays that variety then I might think about number two.

From the pictures, again IMHO and in person it could be different, the second coin seems the easiest to see the "4" under the 5.

I prefer coin 1. It presents the best (even with the wholly forgivable adjustment mark). The color and skin are wholesome and seemingly original.

The second coin I imagine to be darker, with uneven toning plus the less forgivable edge clip.

The third coin appears less original though still acceptable, with a weaker strike.

The NGC looks good. I selected the first coin based on the strike and overall appearance. I think all three are attractive and selecting one is not a bad problem to have. I might keep all three as a mini grading set for the type

For me its the eye appeal of the AU55.

I appreciate all the comments and voting. I also like the NGC 62 example the most out of the group and will likely end up keeping that one and the PCGS AU55. That AU55 is weakly struck with a barely legible overdate, but very lustrous and colorful. At the same time, all 3 are different obverse dies, so why not keep all 3? :D

I like the die cracks on the obverse.
I feel the 58 probably is darker than it presents in the images.
The 62 is a pretty amazing coin. You can send any of them to me, and I won’t turn them down. 😀

Actually you already sent me a 58, back in 2020, so I am good. 😀
    Not an overdate though.

I think I prefer 1. The obverse toning on 2 rubs me the wrong way. The splotchiness makes it look cleaned. 3 looks like it could have really nice surfaces but I am struggling to interpret the photo. It's very possible 3 could be the one that gives the best bang for the buck.

I like the NGC 62 the best.

It (at least the picture of it) just "pops" more in eye appeal, with the portrait standing out better, and with better contrast to the background.

All are very nice pieces, the first one is exceptional but the adjustment knocks it down a bit for me (I've had too many Bavarian Madonna Thalers, I'm fine with never seeing another adjustment mark again!), the second one has a nice originality to it

My favorite is the NGC example, and they have really improved with the photography!

But all three coins are very nice.
