2025 FUN Show Report - a critical error coin discovery
Here's my show report. I will try and avoid paragraphs so that you might read what I have to say.
First off, while traveling to dinner with @winesteven I looked down while exiting his car. Unbelievable:
Notice the mint made depressions and die lines! I will entertain bids.
Now, on with the main event.
Had dinners two nights in a row with some top flight forum members. Some met for the first time and they didn't run away from me!
Was successful in selling two coins to raise funds for an upcoming auction, a primary objective in attending. Yes, I did lose money, especially since I had held them no longer than 2 years. Thems the breaks!
Successfully crossed my NGC 1869-S AU58 CAC half to PCGS. Off to CAC for resticker.
Had fun playing dealer sitting behind @Desert Moon 's table. He's such a smart, sensible, honest person that I'm glad to know. Ditto with @PeakRarities
Bought a couple of Washington quarter toners for the set. Video here: https://player.vimeo.com/video/1046604797
Asked to see a dealer's back table new pieces (not displayed) and picked up an 1869 CAC'd half with color (likely cleaned and retoned, but don't care since it wasn't expensive and I like it). Check it out: (edited for bad link - see pics later in thread)
Consigned a coin to GC that I really shouldn't have bought last year. Picked up a coin from a recent GC auction that was not what I thought it was. Bummer X2.
Attended the PCGS luncheon to find another opportunity to express to Ms. Sabin our collective frustration regarding PCGS's inability to resolve our ability to add newer CAC'd coins to PCGS CAC only registry sets. Felt gaslighted by her once again.
Traded a coin for this pretty 1873 arrows half. Likely won't pass CAC for some reason, but it's a keeper in my book either way. Here's a quick video:
Ran into @ElmerFusterpuck and @breakdown at the show. Two of my favorites here! Also, @PocketChange who dazzled me with his proof 20 centers displayed in an attractive GC felted portable display case. So fine! BTW, the man also belongs in a GQ magazine! Watch out ladies.
Flight was canceled so had to stay Saturday. Walking the half empty bourse with picked over coins just confirmed why I never bother attending shows on weekends.
Had a blast. That's all folks. Oh, one more thing. I didn't get a chance to meet the anonymous @Cougar1978 . Hopefully, one day he'll let me know who he is so I can kick some of his tires. Seriously!

Great report and thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I think now I will have to retreat to formulate a winning bid for the ultra-desirable error you posted at the beginning of this thread. I have half a mind to tell you this belongs in the BST!
In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
It was great meeting you, Catbert! Catbert was manning the DesertMoon table solo when we met Thursday morning and we talked for about five minutes before I realized I was talking with Catbert rather than Desert Moon! (Who I later met when he returned to his table).
Cathert and I share a love for seated halves. We spoke about JBN’s excellent set. JBN and Catbert have each assembled beautiful AU sets with emphasis on toning. I recommend a spin through the images of those two registry sets to all that appreciate toned 19th century silver.
Anyway, great to meet you and look forward to seeing you at future shows!

Great running into you Catbert, it was good to have a captive audience to sit through my procession of double dimes. I did very much enjoy your superb run of seated halves. And if the intent of your flattery is to get a better future deal on any toned proof Washington quarters I may have on offer, well…it’s probably working! Until next time good sir.
Nothing is as expensive as free money.
Thanks for the report and good luck with that upcoming auction @Catbert!
We need EmeraldATV to tell us what is really going on with that cent.
Some great additions and sounds like you had fun! And that error, it's something out of this world!
Just another great report from a great forum member who I need to run into someday. Nice newps but that first error is the winner!
tarnished silver cent, one of a kind
CB - thanks for helping me out at the table and thanks for dinner with the boys! Great FUN!
Best, DM
The fingerprint on the cent ruins it for me. It takes it from a PQ+ coin to a PQ in my eyes. At least you are responsibly holding it by the edge so it doesn't get knocked down any further in grade.
Nice report @Catbert
Love the 73 arrows half, I'm looking for one of those in AU58 CAC
Just close your eyes when you run the cert, the pic is.................well, I'll let you describe it

Yeah, Bob does take some beautiful pics, to bad you can't send the pic to PCGS to replace what they have

The critical error may have been picking the coin up…
Seriously… good to read that you enjoyed the show and hopefully the planning will pay off
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
Cat - Great report. It was great meeting again and having dinner together along with the other four great guys!
Too bad I missed @PocketChange , as both he and I collect Twenty- Cent pieces.
Now we know why MS. Sabin refused to take questions at the end of her short Luncheon talk! She absolutely doesn’t know how to accept criticism, and resolve problems!
Also too bad I didn’t park one spot over to the right when we went to dinner. Had I done that, I’d be the “Lucky Duck” to have found that “rare parking lot find”! But fair is fair, my friend, so it’s all yours!
I’m already looking forward to seeing you next year at Winter FUN!

Thanks for your report. When are you going to list that rare error on Ebay?

I suspect that our private equity overlords may have the intention/goal to make the company much less private relatively soon... if you're smelling what I'm stepping in...

Just my own speculation from recent observations, and if it were true, who knows if "relatively" would be months, or years.

And boy, did I learn that lesson in brutal fashion Saturday, but for other reasons - PCGS closes submissions, and CAC wasn't even around to accept a submission. Oddly enough, finding common date, mid-grade SLHs or a decent 70-CC I can afford was surprisingly difficult as well.
It would have been nice to have met you and others from this forum, but the circumstances that Saturday would not have been conducive to good conversation. I did manage to find a Koala silver round and a Merry Christmas 1 oz. bar for below spot that made my gf happy, so the show wasn't a total waste of time.
Congrats on your new error cent. I also found one in the parking lot when I walked to the convention center and considered it to be "good luck" for the show. SMH LOL! Unfortunately, it lacks the spectacular errors yours has.
Great report. Wish I could have been there! Love that 1873 - my kind of toning, for sure!
Rocking my "shiny-object-syndrome"!!!
I too wish CAC accepted submissions longer, even EOD Saturday would be fine. Often times my PCGS subs don't get back to me until mid day Saturday as they're both closing up (I believe everyone closes @ 12), and it would be nice if I could have dropped them off before I left.

Meeting @Catbert was a definite high point of the show for me... he's a real rockstar looking fellow ... and I even got to hold the amazing wonder error he is, ahh, err <cough, cough> offering here. I can tell you for sure it is a sight to behold!
“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

With the parking lot cent find knocks the parking fee cost down to $21.49.😀
It might be worth it to scatter a roll of Mercury dimes, Buffalo nickels, or Wheat cents in the FUN show parking lot or rest rooms to see what happens next.
For some reason, I cannot correct the video link for the 1869 new piece so here are a couple of phone pics.
