W Quarters Collectors Unite! Please Post Your Collection

WQuarterFreddieWQuarterFreddie Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭✭✭

Every January, I pull out my entire coin collection to remind myself of what I own and to review what I want to keep or sell.

This helps me to focus on my wants and desires for the new year. Always, I am shocked to find a coin that I forgot I own, bought or sold!🤣😂

Recently, I was told by a forum member that I wasn't a collector unless I made a post on the forum about coins I own in my collection.🙄

So I came up with this idea of posting pics of my favorite coins which of course are my W quarters!😎

Also, I am hoping this thread will encourage all members who own them to post pics of their W quarters for all of us to see and discuss.🤞

As you will see, I have many complete sets, raw and graded coins.

The W quarters are why I became a coin collector. I loved the idea of being able to find a W quarter and quickly learned the best way to find one was by buying quarter boxes from my local banks and searching the rolls.

Back in 2019 and 2020 I was fortunate enough to be one of the few who qualified and won the PCGS First Discovery contests for the River of No Return, Marsh-Billings and Tallgrass W quarters!

Also, back then I joined the PCGS Collectors Club, this forum, attended my first coin show which was the Whitman Winter show in Baltimore and in 2020 I was invited to attend the PCGS Luncheon at the FUN show in Orlando which was awesome!

The following pics were taken with my cellphone camera so they are not the best. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to take quality pics but here you go:

Your PCGS Luncheon quarter is not a W, you should definitely give it away.

Nice! Did you find this one and submit to our host?

  • bramn8rbramn8r Posts: 871 ✭✭✭✭✭

@WQuarterFreddie - I think so, I found more than one here, this may be a submission. I'll have to try and figure that out.

If you have more than one W please post your collection when you have the time.

I would love to see how much support we can generate for the W quarters here on the forum

What added value do you think First Week of Discovery brings?

I think that depends on the collector much like First Strike and First Day of Issue labels on other coins.🤔

There is no doubt less FWOD labeled W quarters available so as always the supply vs. demand variable is in play determining their value.

I haven't tracked Ebay completed sales but I will research it later tonight and see how much premium they have over the other labels.

    Great question and thank you!😎

Please post your collection or at least your favorite W quarters for us to see and discuss when you have time.

It probably adds a little more premium. I looks important on the label to the NOT SO EXPERT collector. From where we sit, it's more of a marketing ploy.

"2019-W 25C Lowell NP First Week of Discovery MS64 Submitted in early 2019 for grading at PCGS from a coin found in change"
from my notes, so yes, I submitted it in 2019 as a single coin and received it in April 2019. I have the full 2020-W set on set registry as well.
I'm no expert, but I was enamored with the FWOD and other stuff when it came out, I'll still buy an occasional FDOI but the real joy is finding a coin you like and showing it to your friends

It’s significant - PCGS gives points in the registry for FWOD and Early Find. I have the #9 set for the 2020 W quarters - all my examples are FWOD. Almost all the top 10 sets are comprised of FWOD, which drives up their price.

Back in May, I bid on the PCGS MS66 Salt River FWOD at Great Collections but did not win - it sold for $1,521 including BP. A regular non-FWOD in PCGS MS66 Salt River can be had for less than $100 on eBay right now - big difference!

All W quarters were found in circulation. None could be bought directly from the mint. However, one could argue that many of these W quarters never really made it into circulation or commerce.

They were intercepted from banks, in bank boxes in original bank rolls before they actually hit the streets. Essentially, untouched by human hands.

That is correct for the most part but here is a fun fact:

The first River Of No Return W Quarter that I submitted to PCGS for their First Discovery contest was a true circulated quarter.

I found it in a bank box of rolls but it was a mixed box of quarters so these quarters were circulated at least once and re-rolled for distribution.

Also, I found it on Halloween night and initially thought it was an error because the Mint released them early!

My late father in law Barry, was a roll searcher who spent many hours on the hunt for W quarters. He got interested in the search, when by chance he received a V75/W mint bat quarter in his change one day. During the last year of his life, he was largely stuck at home recovering from a major surgery. To help him pass the time away, we would bring him one $500 box of quarters from a different local bank each week. He would spend hours searching the rolls, and he eventually had accumulated around 60 W quarters and also some silver quarters and S mint quarters found in the rolls as well. When he passed away, we put each of the quarters in air tight capsules. We brought a big basket of these coins to the reception dinner after his funeral. We let family, friends and grandchildren pick out and keep a quarter or two as a memento keepsake of Barry. Here is a quick picture of a few that we still have left.

I am so sorry for your loss.

What a great story and thank you for sharing his story and your family's story.

His search summarizes what I experienced as well when searching boxes that were "mixed" with old and new quarters.

I averaged a silver quarter/box and the occasional S quarter.

I used many of the silver quarters to trade other CRH for their W quarters.

Please send me a PM if you need any raw W quarters to complete a set for one of Barry's grandchildren if they express an interest in wanting one.😎

Thank you for your kind offer Freddie. I still keep an eye out for W quarters in any change I get, but I have never found one that way....yet. In looking through my father-in-laws finds, he found several proof quarters that were broken out of sets and spent, including even a few silver proof quarters which really surprised me .

My pleasure and the offer is sincere. Would love to read that at least one of the kids expresses an interest in collecting a complete W set.

I agree that it is amazing there are still silver coins in circulation. One reason is the Great American Coin Hunt. This is an event that happens in April.

I believe it is still an ongoing event. The following is a link for more information:

The website directs you to social media for more information. If it is happening this year you should encourage the kids to participate in this event.😉

    Great question and thank you!😎

Please post your collection or at least your favorite W quarters for us to see and discuss when you have time.

Thank you for the feedback and documentation which helps to answer Oakstars question.

Please post pics. Would love to see your registry set!😎

Both of them - 2019 is currently #29:

    Thank you! Nice sets!

FWIW the 2019 set is in the correct order of release but the 2020 set is not.😉

Tell it to PCGS - they chose the prefix #'s!

I think that depends on the collector much like First Strike and First Day of Issue labels on other coins.🤔

I am just pointing out that PCGS's prefix / industry numbers are not in the same order of release for 2020 - which I think is surprising.

Agreed. I didn't notice it until your comment.

What is truly surprising is the Tallgrass was the last W quarter released by the Mint.

The other four are in the correct order if you put the Tallgrass at the end.

I just wanted to give a special “shout out” to the OP (WQuarterFreddie)!

We were talking here last week, back and forth on some directs about the W quarters. I mentioned I wanted to give a couple young numismatics a set of W quarters to start their collecting hobby. I asked him to shoot me over a price for the (2) ten piece sets I wanted to pick up for the kids. Instead of quoting me a price for the 2 sets, he sent me out a complete (10) pc. coin set at no charge!! He suggested I split the set in half for each child and then have the kids hunt for the final coins. Great idea OP! You are not only a true collector, but a kind and generous one at that. 😉 Thank you!

    Wondercoin

Thank you for your kind words. Glad to hear you received your W quarters!

Please keep us updated on any successes if the kids decide to hunt for more W quarters.

Would love to read that at least one of the kids expresses an interest in collecting a complete W set.

Also, have them research the Great American Coin Hunt. This is an event that happens in April.

I believe it is still an ongoing event. The following is a link for more information:

    https://www.greatamericancoinhunt.com/

The website directs you to social media for more information. If it is happening this year you should encourage the kids to participate in this event.😎
