Classic Head large cent. Help a guy out that's heading for F.U.N**** Success!
I'm going to be attending my first major show ever. My main mission is to fill the Classic Head large cent hole in my 7070. I'm a 2nd generation collector who is trying to transition from set building and accumulation to a more manageable size. I've been trying to hold the line at straight graded XF-40 for the slabbed coins I buy for the 7070 but will no doubt have to compromise on this. Although I consider myself pretty decent on selecting good coins the early copper is an animal all it's own. Specifically I'm willing to trade a little corrosion for more detail. I'm a person of modest means. My price limit is $1500. I know in an earlier thread a guy was looking for dealer recommendations and kinda got shut down and told to look at the dealer list and then research their website. I tried this but it's to overwhelming for me. Raw is OK if I know it's coming from a trustworthy dealer. So... Any dealer recommendations or general tips on buying a Cent in this price range? Thanks and Happy New Year.

Straight grade XF looks to be around 2000 retail
XF details can be had on eBay around 500 it looks like
Looks like your best bet would be a really nice raw one with just a touch of corrosion that keeps it out of a straight grade holder. Double check that it is truly XF before buying though, because big difference between VF and XF on these.
I’ve been collecting early copper for decades.
If you’re looking to spend ~$1500 and a novice, I would DEFINITELY stick with getting a straight graded TPG coin. I would think a choice VF 30 or 35 could be obtained for that price.
There will be major EAC dealers in attendance. Pierre Fricke, Tom Reynolds, Steve Ellsworth, Chris McCawley, etc. Spend time studying their coins and prices. They tend to charge higher prices, but they have nice stuff. I would still avoid a raw coin even from them. They all carry slabs these days. They also carry some very deceptive problem coins that look nice and glossy, but won’t straight grade down the road. If you’re putting it in a 7070 one of those may be ok, but pay accordingly!
Since you are seeking a generic type coin and not a specific variety, shop around. Quite a few dealers that deal in nice type may have one or two in stock.
shop around and enjoy the quest. compare and be patient. Get a graded example for your type set.

Thank you 2windy2fish. I just changed my profile to public. I'll be sure to look you up.
It always looked to me that the odd numbered years were tougher.
The 09 and 11 especially, the 1813 I think is a little overrated.
It took quite a bit of searching to find the 09 and 11 in the wild in ~Fine, and was quite happy when both straight graded years later.
That was me. I was hoping for some dealers would answer, but oh well. It's not realistic to go to hundreds of dealers websites to look.
If Pierre Fricke is there at the show I highly recommend checking out his booth. He has some nice circulated large cents including Classic heads and I’ve noticed his pricing is often much better than elsewhere. I purchased this one a few years ago from him in an old green holder for about 1/2 of what I was expecting to spend

The 1814 large cent is the easiest to find in my opinion. I would like to purchase one of each date, 1808 to 1814, in no problem VF, but I have found that to be quite difficult. This type has been challenging to find, and “The Red Book” has noted that since the first volume I received in 1959.
I would check with Early Cooper specialist dealers that @Walkerguy21D mentioned. These coins are rather hit and miss with other dealers.
If I recall, I was one poster who suggested he check dealer websites - he was both I) asking about some fairly common low value coins - less than $100 in some cases and ii) asking for dealers to reach out to him (as opposed to asking for dealer recommendations from forum members). Dealers who do $1 million a year in revenue aren’t very likely to reach out proactively to customers when the profit margin is $10-$15 - it’s (literally) just not worth their time. This was likely to lead to him getting frustrated by the lack of response. My suggestion was not meant to deter you (or others) from asking for dealer recommendations, particularly on harder to find coins. Good luck on your hunt - it would be great if you report back after the show and let us know if you had success!
I'm am of the same opinion. A little corrosion or other minor problem is a fair trade for better detail for early copper to be included in the type set album.
You can still PM a member whos profile is set to private, you just have to manually enter their name in the "Recipients" line.

Then type the name, it auto-searches as you type.

Thank you Chris
I’ll try that next time, Bill and i made contact
I empathize with this, it's too bad there is no 'global aggregator' of all the dealers. The closest I know of is Collectors Corner, but that is far from comprehensive.
Did somebody say Classic Cent?
In all honesty that hole is the toughest to fill on a budget. Any other type in the book can be done nicer for less.
If it were me and shopping in that price range I’d hold out for a straight graded 30 with nice color. 1812 and 1814 are the dates you’ll end up looking at the most. Don’t get your hopes up. That’s a tough coin to find.
If you want a filler with character I’ll toss this in my bag and you can PM me at the show. I promise you won’t pay a penny more than I did 😉

Well I walked the floor for two days and ended up buying the cent from 2windy2fish that he offered me here. He also helped me get a great deal on a seated dollar at the dealer next to him. Big shout out to him. Out of 14 holes left in my type set I managed to fill 9 of them and have a solid lead on one more. Thanks to all who responded to this thread
Love it !
Congrats !
Here is the Trueview of the coin…
@shish was set up next to me and provided the nice Seated dollar for @Farmer_Bill !
