1860 S Dime

Dear US coin collectors and enthusiasts,
recently I was offered a 1860 S Dime and would like to hear your oppinion about this coin.

As a German I don't know that much about US coinage, just some bits and pieces from metal detecting videos on YouTube.

Recently a woman in my area sold a collection of mostly German coins she inherited. Amongst them was also this particular Dime wich immediately caught my attention. Eventually I payed her melt value for the German silver coins plus 35 Dollars for the Dime.

What I would like to know:

  • is the coin authentic or do you think it might be fake?
  • if the coin is authentic, wich grade would you put on it?
  • if I I ever wanted to sell this coin, do you think it's worth sending it in to a grading company first?

I apoligize for the bad quality of the pictures. Tomorrow I will try to take some better photos as soon as I have good natural light.

Looks authentic to my eye. I would consider sending to PCGS in Paris.

I think it is worth 10 times what you paid.

...but it will cost 4-5x what you paid to get it slabbed.

Nice coin! Amazing that it is in that condition after a trip over the ocean!

    Authentic, F-102 die variety
    EF-40
If you had it slabbed, there is a good chance it will be called "cleaned", and they will not grade it.

Why would you expect the coin to be in any worse condition after a trip over the ocean, than if it had remained and circulated in the U.S.?

That's a real nice pickup. I spent a couple hundred for my example last summer and that one was a few grades lower.
