The price for the clad commemorative half dollars was already too high. Years ago these coins were priced at under $10, including the fund raising surcharge, so that young collectors could afford them. The mint mounted some of these coins in colorful YN oriented information folders.

Now, if memory serves, they are priced at over $70. That is ridiculous. Does really cost the mint that much to make a base metal coin that is struck on blanks that are used for (almost) made for circulation coins like the Kennedy Half Dollar?

The mint prices are too high, and from what I have seen, more than a few collectors are opting out. I know I am. I buy one, over priced silver Proof set per year. That’s way down from where I was when I kept up with all of the new commemorative coins.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

They want to decrease sales in hopes of creating modern rarities. ( my guess).
As said in another thread , they’re asking $28 for 4 clad Innovation dollars with an intrinsic value of $.28 . The dumbing down is complete.

That’s why I no longer purchase anything from the Mint. I was a loyal Mint purchaser since 1983, and sure, I did well on some of their releases. Their ridiculously high prices the last 5 years drove me away. Their greed and the fleecing of customers has ended my relationship with them.

The mintage would have to decrease a large proportion even from current levels to create an actual scarcity, much less rarity. Yes, the mintages are low, but that's only versus circulating coinage which isn't an equal comparison. None of this coinage is actually scarce for a quality scarcity. Given the low actual preference. I doubt any of this coinage would sell for meaningful premiums much below a "68".
