Flashy new-to-me 1928-S Peace dollar

anablepanablep Posts: 5,120 ✭✭✭✭✭

Tough date in higher mint state conditions, it’s typically held back due to a mushy strike. This one is a MS64+ with an above average strike, flashy luster, & typical, muted Peace dollar toning. The pictures both accurately represent the coin’s appearance. Feel free to comment on my latest addition…

When I started the Peace dollar series about a year and a half ago, I figured the 1928 & 1934-S were the only 2 hard-to-obtain (key) dates in the series. How hard can collecting 24 coins be?

Boy was I wrong. The S-mint dates from 23-S to 28-S are difficult to find in gem condition, a nice strike, with attractive toning (or at least not unattractive toning) and at a reasonable price. The jump from 64 to 65, or from 65 to 66 can be substantial. Condition rarity is real in the Peace dollar world.

I'm not a peace dollar fan, but that one has character.
    I like it!

Thanks! It took me many years to warm up to the Peace design, maybe because in my mind it didn’t fit the classic US dollar coin look. I’m a Morgan guy & the idea of Peace dollars being minted from melted Morgans didn’t sit right with me either.

I think the 2021 Peace dollar revival turned me around on that idea.

That's a very handsome Peace Dollar ... great date and mint combo', well struck, attractive surfaces and nice color. Really quite the coin. <3

Thanks @pursuitofliberty ; I had been watching it for a while on GC and was excited to pull the trigger on it.

I find myself searching for Peace dollars more than Morgans these days. Probably a healthy decision...

Great original tone on that nice looking 28-s. I prefer the Great Collection picture over the true view.

I rather like it! The color is just perfect shows it’s original, but it’s not over the top with extra toning.

I’ve always loved the peace dollar design!
I am a type collector, so I just have one example which is mostly white with slight toning…

An excellent acquisition. I like the TV as it exhibits a gold like tone. Big fan of the Peace design.
