AU55. Not sure it's worth the expense to get common date circulated $10 Libs graded.

Part of my Branch Mint $10's so wanted it in a slab. Just a hobby for me so not worried about the expense. I agree with you that someone looking to make money on coins should not grade this one.

Pieces like this sometimes land in low MS holders. I agree it's AU+ though.

That's how I would grade it and probably PCGS would grade it but he sent it to CACG so.......

Looks to me like it has wall-to-wall lustre,
at PCGS - MS62
at CACG - who knows?

I don't see any wear but I do see a lot of marks in key visual areas on the obverse. MS62 would be my guess as to how it would be graded.

Most coins like this end up in MS-61 or 62 holders. It is technically Unc. with a number of small bag marks in the fields.
Although this coin is a different denomination, it brings up the argument. Which is worse, a small rub or minor bag marks with no rub? This 1861 double ealge is graded AU-58.
Ammended to say, here is an AU-55 graded piece. The grade has to be correct because this coin has a CAC sticker. I bought this piece when I was thinking about doing an exhibit about the Confederate submarine CSS Hunley, but I could not get it to work. The coin is sort of an "orphan" in my collection.
For those who don't now the story, the girlfriend of the captain of the CSS Hunley gave him an 1860 double eagle which he was carrying with him at the Battle of Shiloh. The minnie ball hit the gold coin which saved his life. He had the piece engraved. It was an legend until the ship was recovered, and the engraved coin was found on board, on his body. Here is a replica of that piece which is sold at the gift shop.
MS62 - nice eye appeal!

I was thinking 62 as well.
I think 62 also

I'm thinking a CACG 61.

I am also not seeing an breaks in the luster from the photo so I'm with the MS62 crowd. I am wondering if the rim being a bit chewed up would result in a details grade at CACG.

I am not trying to catch anyone, it did straight grade (at two companies).

Thanks. CACG is really putting out nice photos now. I had never seen the multiple die cracks on this coin. I like it even more now.

I think 62, but could be 58.

I like it as a 61 but due to the nice original color and luster Im fine with 62. I think it's on the line at CACG, but at PCGS 62 all day.

Thanks to all for playing along. This coin was sent to CACG in an NGC62 holder. So, those of you that guessed MS62 are partly correct. If I had posted the coin last week, it is a 62 in NGC's eyes.
A few of you thought you saw friction in the photo. I would not have minded if CACG did as well. An AU58 would have been great for my collection (even better 58+) but after close inspection, they did not find any wear. It came back MS61. This was a coin I allowed a downgrade on. I did not allow that on many that I sent in.
I have sent a number of coins to CACG recently. At the end of the month the "$10 if it doesn't cross" fee goes away. For those wondering about my submissions, if JA did not sticker a coin it did not cross at grade at CACG (and did only cost $10). It was well worth the experiment. For those coins that I allowed to be downgraded, nearly all did get lowered a grade (and received free "Hi-Res" photos). You get 6 photos in all. Here are two examples. Two others are at the top of the thread.

It's time for me to tighten my grading standards ... I guessed 62.
Are we to assume that these coins sent to cac grading failed to sticker? Otherwise they'd be an easy segway to get them in the cac holder.
