Will the grading services grade altered coins ?

I have a Hobo nickel that Bill Fivaz personally authenticated as genuine. Also some dipped coins, such as the 1883 racketeer gold plated V nickel. Do you know if any of the grading services will put these in their holders ?

I was hoping someone would know if PCGS or NGC will do it.

You bring up an interesting question.
I know PCGS will 'grade' the 1943 cent that has been plated.

Yet, I have not seen a gold plated (Racketeer) 1883 nickel graded with PCGS.

I don't think that PCGS or NGC will grade it.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • I think I should have asked is will NGC or PCGS put the coins in holders. I does not matter to me whether or not they are graded.

I suspect a hobo nickel won't be details-gradable, because the carved surface will have removed too much of the coin's original surface to be able to properly assign a "details" grade for the original coin. They can't and won't grade the authenticity of a carving.

A plated racketeer nickel should be assignable a details grade, but of course they won't assign any authenticity to the age or nature of the plating.

If you don't care about the grading or authenticity aspect then why not just buy those generic slabs and do it yourself.

I believe certain coins of historical interest should be slabbed as genuine. When I wanted an English contemporary counterfeit of an English halfpenny slabbed to include in my Colonial type set I used ICG. Odd that PCGS and NGC will not slab these, but will slab domestic counterfeit halfpennies. A little imagination needed. Or maybe just a lack of the needed skills to determine genuineness of these specialty items.

You can buy DIY slabs that are styled after PCGS & NGC slabs. ;)

    Nice!
Also, wasn't there a Chain cent that had the hair detailed heavily re-engraved that PCGS slabbed?

You can call their customer service and ask this question. There should be someone that they can find to answer this question in house.

not sure if id call it a "mistake" ... if its true that a minimum of four people look at the coin during the grading process... perhaps they need better lighting
