Should I get graded

I’m a new to collecting coins (at least new again since the grading companies have been a greater part of the hobby). I have recently acquired a 1909s penny that appears to be in decent shape. There are a few marks and discolorations that I am not sure the cause of. Hoping the intelligence and expertise of this group can help me out. Thanks in advance.

    That's a great album coin.
Unless you are personally concerned about the authenticity, I wouldn't spend the cash.
You would end up sending about 20% or more of the worth on grading.

Save your money. It may even have had a cleaning too so a possible details grade.

It looks like a decent, original circulated coin that wants to be an Extra Fine. The two dark areas on the obverse are light corrosion that should be left alone.

Agreed, there is really no need to have it graded.

As has been said, it would probably get a details grade for being cleaned (burnished). It is still a very nice album coin and would probably sell well just as it is. Do not spend the money to have it slabbed.

If you just have that coin certified at PCGS, shipping to and from and economy grading would cost $75 at least. Anacs/ICG would probably be around half that.

If you want a graded coin, just buy a coin already slabbed in a PCGS/NGC/ANACS holder.

Look in about VF30 to XF40

Compare it to this raw coin

Think it would be a waste of money to grade this coin.

Mega Red Book 2nd Edition (printed 2016) expanded focus on Flying, Indian, Lincoln Cents is a great resource.

It gives you a colored guidelines on what and where to look across each grade.

Then there is the cleaning and other issues that arise not just from average wear.

Best money you can spend, and they cover nearly every popular coin series in different volumes.

Just doing a quick search on Ebay, it looks like a PCGS VF35 is going for $150-$160.

It's for sure not a weak or grease filled VDB. ;)
