PPLT for the USD was a good move earlier last week. RGDS!

You never quite revealed your entry price or exit price. Are you still in PPLT?

It's all right there in the forum. Clear?..... Crystal! SMPR!!

I have a friend that is a coin dealer and he buys platinum over-the-counter, but he will not resell it.

He hoards it, the other day. I looked through his little box and it was chock full of fractionals and small bars and stuff, really really cool to look through!

    I love platinum personally.

Platinum is way cool. Your friend is smart to gather it up, and he's obviously a patient hoarder. He will be rewarded.

With platinum, you have to wait it out over a period of years in order to overcome the larger buy/sell spread and the smaller illiquid market. You can't just jump in and out as a paper player because the odds are exactly 50:50 that you will come out ahead.

    .

The solution is to simply buy at the wholesale prices rather than retail. Of course, you have to be patient for those infrequent opportunities arise. This is exactly what the "coin dealer friend" is doing.

I like the coolness of it, but I too will wait and only pick it up If I can get it close to spot, which occasionally, I can…

I don't pay retail anymore. The internet has connected more people than ever before and desperate sellers will always exist. There are also a lot of resellers and estate liquidators more interested in fast money than big money, and they accept insulting lowball offers on eBay all the time. It's kinda like fishing.. you throw enough lures you're bound to catch a fish eventually.

I don't know if it is a function of getting older or being stubborn but I'd rather just have nothing than overpay. My stack could be bigger but it could also fill a warehouse and I would still feel that way so I try and stay zen and cheap about it.

I did just sell some pr70 platinum that I was sweating about for a number of years but it finally paid in spades. It was worth it.

Yes, always try to get a good deal, but be respectful about it. You will gain some friends & allies.

Even more importantly, go after the stuff that makes sense to you in the long run. It's all going up, so you might as well be holding onto the coins or bullion that you like.

Maybe I should swap my platinum for oranges..........NOT!!!

Orange juice futures are up over 30% since July 1.

Platinum chart is certainly looking better than gold so far this year.

    Key Supply Constraints
South African mine disruptions have kept annual production around 5.77 million ounces, significantly below the 2010–2021 average, tightening global availability.

The World Platinum Investment Council forecasts a third consecutive annual deficit of 966 thousand ounces—the lowest supply since the COVID-19 disruptions in 2020.

    Strong Demand Drivers
Investors are rotating out of gold—whose price hit $3,500/oz highs in late April—into the “discounted” alternative of platinum, boosting inflows into ETFs and futures.

Automotive rebound: tightening emissions rules are driving robust demand for platinum in catalytic converters across Europe, North America, and China.

Jewelry sector: Chinese platinum jewelry sales jumped 26% in Q1 2025 while gold jewelry slumped 32% year-on-year, underscoring consumer shifts toward platinum’s rarity and status.

    Macro and Geopolitical Factors
A softer US dollar has lifted dollar-priced commodities like platinum, making them cheaper for holders of other currencies.

Persistent geopolitical tensions and risk-off sentiment have reinforced precious metals’ safe-haven appeal, benefiting even industrial metals like platinum.

Expectations that major central banks will pivot from tightening to easing monetary policy later this year have also buoyed price rallies across commodity markets.

    Russia’s Export Restrictions
As of mid-2025, Russia has temporarily banned exports of precious metals and PGMs, including scrap, to shore up domestic stocks and processing plants.

This move has reduced immediate secondary supply and could put upward pressure on prices in markets that rely on recycled feedstock.

    Tariffs or sanction threats
President Trump warned he would impose “secondary tariffs” of up to 100% on any country that continues to trade with Russia unless a Ukraine peace deal materializes within 50 days.

U.S. imports of Russian platinum totaled $877 million in 2024, underscoring Russia’s role in global PGM flows.

Secondary-tariff threats against China and India could deter their continued purchase of Russian PGMs, limiting feedstock for refineries and tightening overall supply.

Nice information Goldminers. I suspected Internal Combustion engine automotive rebounding, but much more things are in play now also.

@tincup - I'd say yes, platinum is now a better buy than gold (but silver is probably even better). That takes nothing away from gold and gold should be the main anchor in anyone's PM portfolio.

APMEX is asking more than $450 premium for one-ounce random date platinum eagles. Very hard to justify that asking price when there are plenty of other places to buy these for much less.

Scotsman has about a 6% buy/sell spread, which is pretty good for platinum historically.

Platinum hit $1,500 just for a minute on July 21st. Down $80 since then on profit taking.
