I would imagine these plastic PCGS & NGC slab boxes do not contain any PVC material?

I need to buy one of each so I prefer asking before buying them just to be safe.

My general rule of thumb, and it isn't perfect, is that if it smells like a vinyl shower curtain then it has PVC. If it doesn't, then it is less likely. These hard plastic cases have been around a long time and the TPGs know the poison that PVC can be to coins, which would make me think they are essentially inert.

I can't imagine that they would contain PVC. Even if they did, your coins would be fine as long as the slabs aren't damaged. One word of advice: if you buy a PCGS box with tape on it, try taking the tape off the top sideways and slowly. (I took it off mine normally and it tore off some of the gold foil)

  • If uncertain, maybe consider a Lighthouse box.

Has anyone here had any issues with these cases over the years?

I have been using them for three-pus decades and they have never degraded, off-gassed any noticeable odors or affected coins stored in them in any way. I have used them at shows, in my home and in SDBs. They are like tanks.

I keep pretty much all my coins in these. I haven't had any issues.

These boxes make it so much easier for me to store my many extra inventory coins.
I have had coins in these boxes for many, many years and have not experienced any PVC signs or damage.

Do remember that it's not the PVC per se that is the problem. PVC is a hard plastic. You use it everyday - waste water pipes are almost always rigid PVC.

Now, to make it softer for use in flips and such they add plasticizers and that's what causes the problems.

I doubt the boxes are made from PVC, there are better plastics to use for molding boxes. If you want to go down the rabbit hole, this is always fun https://www.xometry.com/resources/injection-molding/

To get the PCGS grading inventory labels off of the ends easier, warm them with a hairdryer first and they come right off easily without tearing and needing goo-gone to fight the remainders.

What are we talking about here? What labels?

When you send coins into PCGS for grading, they return them back in these containers usually with paper labels on one end that they mark various names or numbers for reference.

If you are buying them used, someone probably already removed the labels for you, or they did not have them on in the first place.
