1st time submitting help

Good evening everyone,
I joined PCGS and received 8 free submissions and I need help if someone is kind enough to guide me.

I have about 10 coins total I want to submit, the questions are. 1 of them is a GB Sovereign, and 1 of them US coins, 1 of them is over 2500 in value, the others I don't think so.

If you submit a coin and turns out is worth more than the promotional limit of 2500, will they contact you to pay the difference?

Do I need to do a separate submission form for the coin I know is worth well over 2,500?

How do I label the mylar flips?

Can I use the promotional grading wiht an online submission?

Is it ok to use Fedex, as we have sooo many problems with our USPS office...

Any other information I should know.

I really appreciate any help, I am excited to have my coins graded and slabbed, I am going to pass them on to my son!

I'll give advice where I can...

    • I don't think you can mix US and world coins on any submission
    • If a coin is above the selected service level value they will upcharge to the next level for that coin. I've had this happen twice.
    • I would separate the coin that you know is worth "well over $2500". A simple mistake is one thing but intentionally using the wrong service level is another.
    • I usually label my flips by hand with sticky labels. Submission number, line number. I've also labeled coins by putting a flip label in the other side of the flip with the information
    • By promotional grading I am assuming you mean vouchers, if so, yes. There is a "I have a voucher" selection when you start an online submission.
    • Use USPS registered mail . It is the safest option

I really appreciate your help, sorry if I am making it harder than it really is, but you cleared some things up for me, I do really appreciate it, kudos to you for helping me with these questions.

No, they are all US coins, Libery head Dollars.

  • What level service do i select if I have vouchers for a gold coin or a sivler liberty dollar, I dont see an option...

Gold needs to be regular or higher. The silver liberty dollars you mention, are they Morgan dollars?

I have both kinds, the Morgan and the Peace dollar....are those regular service as well? Can i use my vouchers on the regular? Sorry if I sound so stupid, but I have never submitted anything and don't know what i am doing....Can I submit the gold and the silver in the same mailing or is it better to ship separately? Is the true view worth the charge?

These are some of the gold coins I wanted to grade..I know some people have told me it's not worth it, but to me it is...

You have world gold. That needs to be done separate from US gold. The Cal Gold also needs to be separate. The two Morgan dollars you post are just the reverse. Are those 1921? Based on the pictures of those two dollars, do not waste the voucher. Send in something else.

Also, consider posting images that do not include your address for security reasons.

I see 3 different forms from what you show. Regular, economy special issue (your 1880 CAL gold will get details because of hole) and world regular for the sovereign. Your 1835 quarter eagle looks circulated so will be below the $2500 cut-off.

I do not see the coin well north of $2500 unless the Morgan is rare date or quarter eagle reverse goes to another obverse. If you have USPS office, you must be in US so there could be a PCGS dealer nea you that could help with submission.

The PCGS website has more information on submission - a couple helpful pages for you

    You are not being dumb.
I was intimidated when I did my first submission.
Just break it down the way everyone described.
Write the steps down on a piece of paper. You have got some solid guidance here.

  • Ok so here are the coins I will submit, using the online submission form,
1889 Gold Liberty head 2.50 piece
1907 $20 gold Liberty Head (this one I think might be more than the $2,500 limit on vouchers)
1835 $5 gold US Liberty head
1853 $1 gold US Liberty head
1880 1\2 Cal Large Indian Head, notched

    separately also submit
    1892 GB Gold Sovereign

So my last questions and I thank you all, I owe you all a cup of coffee,
Can I use vouchers on all of these except the GB Sovereign, or does the Indian Head rarity not get submitted with voucher

Can all these be submitted under the 'regular' service level, except for the Indian head rarity

Im excited to see how they grade when they come back, do they show you online when they finish or is it a surprise until you actually receive them..

    thank you agin

Oh I have the Platinum membership if that matters...

I've never submitted to PCGS. But i have sent coins to NGC, CACG and ANACS. I had questions that I had to call their customer service, and they were able to answer them and helped me with the submissions. Good luck and lets know how the coins come back.

I question whether I would submit the 1880 CAL 1/2 dollar gold that had a hole and is now notched. You would end up paying shipping both ways (the going to PCGS shipment could be combined with the rest), the $10 handling fee and the special issues grading fee. This coin should not be combined with the rest, You could try and see what they do about it. I have not looked to see how rare it is - is it BG-1068? - but would value it less than $300 with the damaged hole.

Most of that information is referenced here-

You can submit them all under the regular tier and utilize the vouchers, don’t worry about the $20 lib. When it’s only exceeds the limit by trivial amount (~10% ish or less?) it will likely process without an issue. If the value is understated too much, then they will adjust the fee for that coin and any coins that may have graded higher than expected.

The only potential pitfall I could see is if you had to file an insurance claim, at which point you might shoot yourself in the foot if you get too “creative”, but that’s why I said “trivial”.

Edited to add- All the services have some sort of leeway if the value is too low but I’m not sure if there’s a specific percentage. I think it just might be discretionary at P & N, but I’m pretty sure it’s around 30% at CACG. I can’t seem to find where I read it but I’m pretty sure it was on their forum.

You will be able to log into your account and track your submission from received by PCGS through sending it back to you. Once the grades are finalized they will be posted online for you to view and share if you would like.
