PCGS Slab Photos

Interesting, it appears PCGS is doing slab photos now. I sent in this coin for reconsideration at Express service level which includes a TV, but I believe (at least in the past) you only got a TV if it upgraded. If not, you get the coin back, but no bother or care that you paid Gold Shield fees and received no GS benefits. Maybe things are changing. I did ask for the coin to be TV'd. The coin hasn't shipped yet so I don't know if they're done with it, but this is what the coin cert photo now shows. I've never seen this type of slab photo from PCGS before. It's unfortunate though that the picture quality isn't great. :(

I have felt for many many years that PCGS should at least do slab photos of every coin they grade. This is a simple way to aid in avoiding fraud and/or counterfeit slabs.

Interesting. PCGS overseas has done some of the 'trueviews' with the holder showing. I agree that in past when doing a reconsideration that if not upgraded, then no new TV (as coin was not removed from holder). I, within the past year, did some in-holder TV (no re-holder or grading or anything else but photo in the current holder) and those were cropped out showing only the coin. If you specifically requested the new TV even if it did not upgrade, then I would have expected the cropped out of holder photo. So this is a new one to me also.

One point and it occurred on my in-holder TV, the cert now says - holder type Gold Shield. I notified them on mine that that was incorrect and no new holder was issued.

The good news is that you have a rather rare “error” coin with an upside down eagle. ;)

If you requested a TrueView, it should be close-up shots of the coin in the usual format. I’ve had this done with a number of old holders. Perhaps the photography department did not feel up to the task. In any case, contact customer service.

Strange, wonder if you will also receive the normal TV photos. Although I cannot imagine why you would want to pay for TV photos given the recent reviews of the quality.

Recent TV's have been much better overall but are still hit and miss. I'd rather have "a" photo than no photo.

The last time I submitted for reconsideration I went a few rounds with customer service to ensure I got in-slab TVs but it was painful and they resubmitted it as a separate submission after the recon submission was completed.

I can only recall seeing one sub that the submitter felt the photos were decent, and that was sanctions group of cameo proofs. But that is not the point, why gamble when there are so many great coin photographers available that will take great photos of coins. Every bad TV is a potential anchor that might weigh down a coin when the time to sell comes.

I recently bought a coin from a forum member with one of those terrible TV's, I was going to pass but made an offer that was low enough that I can now afford to send the coin in for a new cert or more likely cross it to CACG where I'll get a good photo and ditch the stigma of the TV.

Just what I like ... having to turn my computer upside down to view the reverse side ... wait until they TV slab photos of 3CS, 3cn and HALF DIMES ... then will to need to zoom in on every photo or use a magnifying glass to see it.

Looking at the pops/values I can see why you’d like a 65+ (pop 6) or 66 (top pop 3) ……. tough date in DMPL! Good luck.

These in-holder images started back in 2016. I had a big hand in developing the process by which they're done. For the most part they have been used to shoot slab photos for product graded in PCGS branch offices in Europe and Asia. Some product shipped to the PCGS home office in the USA from overseas also undergoes this process. Looks like they're now using it to document graded product that was submitted before TrueView came around (2005).
