Another PCGS cert used for something else…

A friend in another forum posted this 1928 PCGS MS65 peace for sale on the internet.

Interesting, as the front barcode did not scan with my software but the reverse QR code scanned to the “CN” PCGS site.

The actual cert had an image of the genuine example and these did not match; but nothing cried out as counterfeit either! I did notice some signature toning on the suspect example.

As I always do, internet searching found an Aliexpress listing for a similar imaged example with a different cert number. The toning matched the suspect coin…

And that cert matched and had images as well as a past Heritage auction listed.

So, Ali is not only using the genuine example and PCGS slab to sell something, but a photoshopped slab and coin image is being used for another!

One has to wonder what he would actually receive if purchased…

The PS 37772255 image showed up for sale again and was removed before a sale; just another attempt to sell something bad to the unwary!

So, they took a picture of a genuine coin and slab, and added their own label to the image?

Is Aliexpress the actual seller or are they a hosting site like eBay?

AliExpress is a venue similar to eBay. You register a credit card with them which is used to buy from sellers on their web site. When you buy something, they hold your payment until you receive what you bought and are entirely happy with your purchase. Only then will they release your money to the seller.

Thanks @braddick , I had not seen that post. The 2nd listing I saw listed was a different seller name and already seems to have moved on without a sale.

I have the Ali version on order, so we shall see.

Thank you @goodmoney4badmoney ! So, to sum it up there appears to be two scams here:

1st, photoshopped images using a genuine coin to sell "something" on the Bay...

2nd, images of the same genuine one with correct cert # to sell "something" direct from Aliexpress...

I suspect they are connected somehow B) ...

i suspect the counterfeiter is making these doctored images to sell with the counterfeits

I plan to write an article on these, as this took a strange twist today...

Brand new seller started yesterday and listed this one; same cert but different "coin". Looks like they tried to orient the same way the genuine photoshopped coin is in the slab. New one on the left:

This latest one appears to be different from the previous. I will note a few thing and you can decipher.

First the latest one does not have the proper inner ring holding the coin and it looks like many of the other fake slab rings. Note the standoff-spacing and how the coin when between the prongs appears to almost touch the inner ring.

On the reverse the hologram sticker is different. The lighting is different on it and the location is different (look at the phrase writing location). The QR code still reads correctly.

On the obverse the photo is terrible and that might be intentional and it makes the following comparison more questionable. But it appears the font is different, looking at the $ and sheriffs on some letter like the C G S 1. The gold shield does not appear to have the metallic look. Barcode blur.

Looking I am wondering if this one is just a fake slab with a fake printed label and sticker. But agree the obverse is rotated to appear like the other. The reverse is not rotated and may be an actual picture of the fake.

Again I don't know but just thought I would throw the observation out there.

understandable why they use a real photo of an unc coin. the counterfeit would get a brown bean

Kind of humorous, received this response to reporting this one through the new standard eBay reporting channel, but it was actually removed B) ...

    And today's update.

So, how could this get worse (or more confusing) you may ask! Well, the AliExpress listing updated their image to a different genuine coin, another with similar coin orientation in the holder and sold in a 2021 Heritage auction.

Please remember that AliExpress is a marketplace, just like fleaBay, Amazon Marketplace, SprawlMart Marketplace etc.

Individual sellers control their own listings. And the marketplace provides (minimal?) common services.

AliExpress is a valuable resource for B2C sales of things like electronics from smaller manufacturers (want the latest single-board computer and willing to wait a month?).

Unfortunately, almost all of the coin listings are counterfeit (I'm sure SOMEBODY accidentally posted a genuine coin).

Accidentally? Two different genuine coin images for PCGS peace dollars...

@burfle23 I wasn't saying THIS listing was legit, I was saying across the millions of listings on the site, somebody probably accidentally posted ONE legit coin.
