Dallas PCGS on site grading experience and results.

I decided to submit 17 Jefferson nickels for onsite grading service I
at PCGS show in Dallas 19/09/24. The coin show submission form does not have a mint error/ special issue box. I asked the girl who was taking my coins for submission about this because I had several error coins I wanted graded. She acted as though she didn’t know what I was talking about but assured me they would be graded properly and to just put write a description on each coin and they would grade it accordingly. I found out the next day when I picked up the coins PCGS does not attribute varieties or designations at the show submissions. She actually told me they don’t advertise with an air quotes gesture. Apparently they just do straight grading. I can give an example of one as the pictures have populated now on TrueView. 1945 P DDR and I believe full steps. Graded MS63. And another graded MS65

I’m wondering if I have to resubmit them with the online form and just eat the $70.00 per coin show submission? Or if they will work with me on paying the extra for the varieties and designations? Thanks

So...it did not get the DDR designation?

Thanksgiving National Battlefield Coin Show is November 29-30, 2024 at the Eisenhower Allstar Sportsplex, Gettysburg, PA. Tables are available. WWW.AmericasCoinShows.com
  • No, neither of those two got the ddr or full step designation. The TrueView pictures are not what I expected either. But it’s an over night turnaround.

  • Or another, 1955 D/S Graded straight MS66

Are you sure they would not have gotten the FS designation if they thought they warranted it? Your 1960's and 1963-Ds seem close, but not quite. A bummer you ended up paying so much for quick turnaround but not getting what you had hoped.

The 1945 nickel is nice but I only see 3 or possibly 4 full steps…which I don’t believe qualifies for a FS designation…..

  • Yeah, it’s often hard to tell full steps unless in hand. Here’s a zoom of the steps and DDR

  • And the other.( 804 30.5)

I will stick with my previous post on this, link below.

The FS is part of the normal grade and if it did not come back that way it is because pcgs did not grade it FS.

The 1955 D/S also appears to be one that does not require a special variety attribution fee as coin #4058 but again should check that one to verify (see previous). So it may be that pcgs did not agree or missed it?

For the two that require the variety attribution, at this point could submit for re-holder with VA.

I don't know if pcgs will do anything but could maybe not charge the re-holder fee or....

  • Okay, thanks. I did just reach out to them and they said the only thing to do was to send in for reholder and also pay the extra for variety attribution. That’s what I’ll have to do. You live and learn. 😊

Neither of the posted pics show full steps in my opinion.

    bob :)
PS: nice to know they don't do varieties at shows.

It would also be nice if they educated there staff at these shows!
$70 a coin and you didn't get what you wanted and weren't told that they won't do variety attribution..................I'd be very upset!
This in my opinion is unacceptable and would demand a refund for the service you didn't receive because the staff member was clueless.

Are you certain this is a D/S variety? I’m not an expert jeff collector, but your mintmark looks different than the ones shown on coinfacts. I don’t see remnants of an S anywhere underneath that D.

I’m not doubting you if it is the variety, just making sure you have the real deal when you go back to pcgs with this coin.

Yes, it’s not very obvious in the picture but it’s a D/S. I also sent 10 more 55M D/S for grading as well. I found them all in a roll about 15 years ago.

There are many 55 D/S reverses. I think only the FS-501 (CONECA OMM-001) is the Red Book variety that commands the big(ish) premium, and it is probably the only one the PCGS would attribute as such.
