Damaged 1798 Large Cent Value

Bought one at a recent show from a customer. It is slightly bent, has a hole drilled through it and has some black spotting. Never bought one before, but thought it was worth buying as it is a 1798 large cent, and I didn't pay much for it. How would you value it in the condition it's in? Haven't posted photos before, but I might be able to.

You really need to post pictures. The more sharpness, the better. Given the multiple problems, I would say not very much, but I’m no an expert on pricing problem coins.

It would be a generous stretch to say $20. Almost a painful stretch. And I would feel like I’d be paying $19.99 too much. A good hole filler needing a plug.

    I would say $20 max.

The 1798 being visible is an attribute, so anywhere from $5 - $20 is probably a reasonable estimate.

It’s probably a $10-15 item though I don’t know if it’s a better variety. It’s a plus that the date is clear. Neat coin to place on your keychain.

    $5-10

I agree with $20 as a maximum though I wouldn't pay anything close to that much. At least the date is clear.

  • I would not buy the coin at all, but instead would try to trade the owner out of it. That way, there's no misplaced "value" being set because if it has any value at all, surely it's minimal. And then I would personally use the coin as an educational piece at coin club meetings, etc.
