No surprise for the grade but looks to have amazing luster also. Wish there was a video of it.

Being jaded, one has to ask where the CAC sticker is (or isn't.)

    $5000 coin in a 68 holder. $100,000 plus in PCGS 69.

Not a bauble for the average collector, so for a deep pocket registry competitor, price may be ok, well at least for two bidders, anyway.

We can assume it failed, which is hardly a surprise that CAC doesn’t see it as a 69. Frankly, I’m pretty surprised that it was given that grade during the OGH era when so many other coins were graded conservatively, and I’m curious how the coins appearance may have changed over the years. I would love to know who the original submitter was…

If it were cracked and resubmitted, I would be surprised if it comes back as 69. Without the existing holder influence would call it a 68.

Coin in GC photo looks to be hazy and dull. Grade is more impressive than the coin is. Perhaps it is different in hand.

    That’s pretty awesome!

I agree, I personally do not like that russet toning.

Too bad the coin wasn’t posted without the grade included in a “Guess the Grade” thread.

Would have been fun but the coin was also near the top of GC's emails all week. Would have been hard for many of us to avoid knowing the answer in advance.

I’ll bet it’s remarkable in hand.

This coin was recently displayed. I think it was ANA but I do not guarantee as I sometimes just don't set these things to memory. I still have a couple of similar coins (no not grade but tone). One Eliasberg and another an OGH. While the coin can appear hazy in some views, even in hand, tilting it and changing the light and luster cuts through much of it and appears more varied golden-rust tone. This is even seen on the two GC photos with the photo cropped out of the holder showing more luster coming through. Tilting the coins I have to an extreme angle one can see the toning film and it then can appear kind of thick and the areas of toning color change are seen differently (some almost like a smudge) when tilted. I wonder if some of this is/was due to how they were stored.

For how these coins were just tossed into bags, and then counted multiple times before just being locked away, I’m amazed that so many are high grade. Making millions of them improved the odds but still.

Positive dealing with oilstates2003, rkfish, Scrapman1077, Weather11am, Guitarwes, Twosides2acoin, Hendrixkat, Sevensteps, CarlWohlforth, DLBack, zug, wildjag, tetradrachm, tydye, NotSure, AgBlox, Seemyauction, Stopmotion, Zubie, Fivecents, Musky1011, Bstat1020, Gsa1fan several times, and Mkman123 LOTS of times

Anything Ms68 or higher couldnt have spent time in a bag imo, likely they were plucked by employees shortly after they came off the press. Maybe if it was on the top it might still be a 68, but 69s had to have been given special care.

Not sure how this helps as difficult to judge from photos but here are more 69's. The one noted above by PR is actually the plate coin for the 80 S on coinfacts (Note: the HA cropped out of holder and in holder photo difference and then the TV difference - so need to see in hand).

    https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1880-s-1/7118

    And then some more:

    The 'What date' 1896 S 69

    https://auctions.stacksbowers.com/lots/view/3-OPO0A/1896-s-morgan-silver-dollar-ms-69-pcgs-cac

The 80 S 69 PL (no thanks and I did see it)

    https://coins.ha.com/itm/a/1251-5744.s

    The two 81 S 69 on coinfacts.

    https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1881-s-1/images/7130

There is another 80 S 69 (and one of the above 81 S 69) in this registry set (retired) but the image is a thumbnail. However, it is currently on collectors corner.

    @lilolme

Agreed on the 69pl, "no thank you". IMO the roller marks alone are enough to preclude 69, let alone the other contact marks or the dip residue.

There was a controversial member here years ago that was marketing an MS69 Morgan dollar. He was younger and rubbed many of the members. here the wrong way.
I wish I could recall his handle. The Morgan was pretty.

Or perhaps talking about the infamous Jarret aka BNBAnalytics? I don't recall Cameron ever rubbing many forum members the wrong way.

Thinking more about this, it was an NGC graded Morgan- MS69.
    This one looks familiar:

Again, he was a real hard charging member who had strong opinions and beliefs.
I think he purchased his Morgan and was trying to sell it on eBay at an asking price- at the time-
that was double or triple what he paid.

I don’t really know, it was before my time. When I stumbled across his name initially and did a dive in the archives, I ended up ATS and comments there indicated he was being bashed on this forum for one thing or another. A terrible tragedy, notwithstanding.

He was either going to totally make it big time or crash and burn.

Long story short, he burned a lot of bridges in the industry back in the early 2010's. He also sold some nice coins too, just quite a brash guy. Supposedly resurfaced on this and other coin forums under different aliases here and there over the years, but unclear on specifics. And then there was a random post about 15 months ago or so claiming that he passed away, but it ended up being a hoax, which was just so incredibly odd and appalling to see here.

Coincidentally, I just stumbled upon your thread about controversial members from 2012. Both Cam and BNB are noted.

Funny how you can throw any raw walker into a porta potty in the middle of a tornado and the thing comes out with a gold cac sticker, but this beautiful Morgan gets shunned as a C coin for the grade.

I fear the blue dye would render it market unacceptable.
