Grader notes

Hi I was expecting the Grader notes to be more extensive. Here's the note I got today with my graded card:
Surface - Wrinkle lower left front

I guess I was expecting what the centering numbers were front and back etc. I can see the wrinkle lol.
Was hoping for a PSA 4. Their definition of a PSA 4:
VG-EX
PSA 4
A PSA 4 card's corners may be slightly rounded. Surface wear is noticeable but modest. The card may have light scuffing or light scratches. Some original gloss will be retained. Borders may be slightly off-white. A light crease may be visible. Centering must be 85/15 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the back.
But I should be happy with the PSA 3 score as it could have been harsher?

That left edge is one of the roughest OPC cuts I've ever seen. LOL

I agree, a PSA 4 might have been more accurate.

Sorry for the 3. That's still a really nice OPC Gretzky.

  • Man that's really disappointing. Either do them or don't do them, but if they're going to do grader's notes, they should flag the flaws on the card that resulted in the grade. Seems like half a measure, which isn't the way to run a best in class company.

Just brutal, and I am someone that normally doesn't mind the rough cut!

Love that cut, and yes this should be a 4

4.5 -- centering is really good. Once again it should be based on eye appeal as much as possible. we are basically in a consensus that it's a 4.

  • I assume with PSA there is no one to complain to and get it relooked at. I maybe should re-submit to SGC?

First, congrats on a beautiful OPC Gretzky. I’m not an OPC expert but I looked this beautiful card over, anyway.

I found something lower leftthat extends from boots to border:

Without original raw scans and/or an in hand evaluation, it’s not always easy to find issues on a slabbed card. That said, if that’s a scratch or a mild crease or a ripple in the cardboard, that could be the reason for the grade of VG 3.

Check it out - I could definitely be wrong - and I am only trying to help you.

    And again, beautiful card.

That’s incorrect - you can actually send it back in for a review to PSA. The caveat is it’s not free and may not yield the desired result.

I think that's the issue that the grader notes was referring to.

How much did it sale for is one of the funniest and most ignorant things I've ever heard.

  • I’ve been looking at it for a couple of days now. That crease in the bottom left would definitely put it Psa3. It is a nice card!!!

  • The grader say the crease and noted it and a psa 4 can have a crease. So its within what he noted to be a PSA 4. I might as well have the full experience and send it back.

I WOULD GIVE IT A 4.5, BUT i don't work for PSA. Eye appeal to me is worth more than small issues.

A wrinkle is not a wrinkle is not a wrinkle....

A range of wrinkles and associated surface damage definitely exists. Each degree of damage lowers the grade significantly.

Back surface wrinkle...Front surface wrinkle with no paper loss...Front surface wrinkle with paper loss...Full thickness crease.

    6...5...4/3...2

Unfortunately, the above Gretzky would be in the 4/3 range.

  • Back to the grader notes a better explanation would help = they said Surface - Wrinkle lower left front, explain how that causes it to be a 3 - severe wrinkle with grading. Why not give it a 3.5 then. But a PSA 3 grade it states it has a crease. This to be is a wrinkle and not a crease as the grader stated.
I still think its a PSA 4 and will send it back

First thing you should know is PSA doesn’t follow their own posted standards. Which makes grading very confusing, for all of us.

It would be nice to see someone's notes on one of these 9s/10's that come back a 6/7. Thanks for sharing yours.

I think the absence of a true corner on the top left is also keeping this card from grading higher. Just about anything vintage with a wrinkle or crease is coming back with less than a 4.

  • That would be the kind of more detailed grader notes I would like to see. This card was a PSA 3 because of ....

  • Did PSA recently update the grading exemplars (1-10) for the 52 Mantle on their website? Excluding the 8-10 they look like different examples.

Also when did they remove the other player exemplars (1-10)?

I would also like to see that but I don’t think PSA can put all their criteria on display like that.

  • I just go back to what they wrote = Surface - Wrinkle lower left front.
Thats like nothing i can see a wrinkle
