Am I paying to much for mid grade draped bust quarters?

I've been trying to upgrade some tougher variety draped bust quarters (vf-25or 30's) for some time now. However according to the PCGS price guide I'm not finding any that coincides with the guide prices. Usually it's 500.00, 600.00 more. Is the guide off or am I just paying to much?

You might be able to contact PCGS and see if they will take your transactions into account in the price guide.

Well, you've been at this goal "for some time now" and you are looking for "tougher" varieties. I think that tells you quite a bit when wondering if you should treat a price guide as gospel.

I can find ugly Draped Bust quarters at price and even less than price guide. I don't buy those. I want nice eye appealing DBQ and you have to pay up for them. Price guides are not for great looking coins, they carry a premium. The trick is to know how to recognize that.

How do they compare to CDN bid / CPG? Lots of auc competition? Aggressive high bidding? Get the CDN digital dealer ap. However don’t doubt aggressive bidding on them. I would want avoid bid war. Strategic avoidance better part of valor.

Varieties are a dying breed unless well known. If you’re asking the question, I assume you know the answer.

Can’t take it with you, have fun.

Well I can tell you finding rare varieties in the draped bust series in attractive grades is near impossible and price guides are just that a rough guide.

All depends on the look of each coin. Nice originals are worth a premium and are not seen often. Good luck with the set.

@manlye1 and @EastonCollection tell it true. Midgrade DBQ generally are in rough shape or cleaned. Any attractive example is worth more than guide. And depending on the varieties you’re looking for you may have to pay multiples of guide.
It is a tough tough series!

    +1

Have you tried selling any of your coins? I don’t know anything about the series but if you’re getting 50 cents on the dollar you might be paying too much.

These are very tough to find nice and original, I finally got a nice one for type from @spacehayduke, who I think has some of the best eyes for this series.

Yes, we are all paying to much! But you get the coin! isn't it great to have such a cool thing? enjoy it!

If you’re buying them at auction, you’re paying one increment more than the other guy thought it was worth.
If there are 3 of you who know what you’re bidding on and are actively going after them, then you’re Ok.
If it’s just you and the other guy. You might be in trouble.

    Nice 1806 PCGS VF20.

What have you had to pay above CPG / Coin Facts (or Var ref) to get them?

I was actually serious. Someone here did this recently.

No, you are not over paying. In 20 years you will look back and say "those were the days, I wish they were a cheap now as then".

Its a very very tough series to locate nice eye appealing coins. If you have patience, then it will be a while between each acquisition unless you get lucky. Such a cool series to collect - so much history to learn. Finding an attractive mid grade1804 quarter is almost impossible.

I found it beneficial to just lower my standards to the VG/Fine levels.
