Home Metal Detecting

metal machines recommendation

Hi Guys,

I was thinking it might be fun to do some metal detecting with my son and blow some Ebay bucks at the same time. Is it possible to get a decent metal detector for under $100 on Ebay? Does anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks.

I wouldn't think so. But I have been wrong many times before. Even a respectable used machine should cost multiple times that. It's a great hobby. But a subpar machine will probably just aggravate you and your son. Good luck

The least expensive detector that I normally recommend is the Minelab Vanquish 440. If money is really an issue, get a Minelab Vanquish 340. They are $200 new and you can probably find a used one on eBay for $150 or so.

These are great detectors, especially considering the low price. Anything else in the same price range is inferior and many of those aren't much more than toys.

I've been wanting a new one anyway so that's a good starting point, thanks 👍

At the risk of seeming crass, I have both a Minelab Vanquish 440 and Vanquish 540 that I am looking to sell. Both detectors are only lightly used.

The 440 has worked well for me. The only issue are the pull tabs.

I've never found a pull tab...maybe you ought to change you hunting locations? Of course, I only hunt in the Mojave Desert and not many drinkers make it out that far!!

    bob :)
PS: I think everyone that searches beaches and parks find pull tabs. I don't think if that is you venue that you can avoid them. I may be wrong but it is a COMMON problem from what I see with detectorists on the internet.

The problem is that they have almost the identical signal to nickels.

You are very lucky. Here in Germany I've dug (ten-) thousands of them. Mainly because I like to go to littered locations nobody elese likes to hunt. A lot of work, but it's mostly virgin ground and every few dozen or hundred holes there is something really good. The celtic bronze stater in my profile picture came from such a littered place wich most other detectorists avoided.
