Is this error something anyone has seen before?

This is the error on a 1916-D penny. I call it a “crooked i in Liberty”

Is it just a one off? Value?

It is damage that occurred after it left the mint.

Not trying to argue with you but it does not seem like that. Where the i should be is perfectly smooth . It looks exactly like the i was struck that way not gouged or struck with a metal object

It is damage that occurred after it left the mint. Referred to as ‘post mint damage’. It is not a mint error.

@JBK IS one of the knowledgeable people on this board. He was trying to get you to think for yourself so you can understand that type of damage. I have collected error coins since the 1970's. You're about the 5,000th person that I know of that thinks this type of damage is an error.

It is important to understand the minting process and then visualize how something could, or could not, have happened.

If it were struck that way, there would be thousands of them.

What you see is very common of the coin takes a strike in the one. The metal was moved to the left.

There is no way for that to happen at the Mint. 100% certainty that it is not an error.

Hi Matt, you can see the evidence of the hit that moved the metal in the “I” in your second picture. It left a shallow dent in the field.

Please don't post cell phone pictures of microscope images. Pull the card out and use the image directly.

The double pixelization hides most of what we're looking for. Many of the people you are asking for help will see the garbage images and just move on. Help us to help you.

Could be damage caused by the coin wrapping machine that crimps the end of roll?

Coin wrapping damage would push it inward, not outward. It is
just damage from taking a hit.

It is definitely a one off. Probably not another coin damaged post mint exactly like that one. Send it in for grading.
