A very serious thought on switching Hobbies!
Hi guys,
Well, this could be a game changer? Sorry, pun intended! 😆
Recently been in the Sports Card game.
Not too long ago, I purchased 4 Caitlin Clark, Graded cards, PSA/BGS from Ebay.
Since then, I
occasionally purchase some Basketball & Baseball boxes.
Well, being aware of Caitlin's Hot Cards.
Soon after, then I heard of the, Victor Wembanyama, craze!
Because of my recent buys, I've come across some nice valued cards!
Today, I ripped a pack from a box of,
2023, 24 Topps Chrome Basketball
and found a
Victor Wembanyama
Green Parallel RC. $170!
Added to my other lower valued Wembys (12).
So, I've been flipping many of my coins for the Boxes!
Then finding out, some are profitable. Making out very well.
Don't get me wrong.
I still Love the Coin Hobby and it's coins but my passion has been leaning more to the Cards side.
Sure, you guys are probably going to suggest to me, "why not do both?"
Well, we'll see.
After my new Retirement life Segway...
Maybe, it's time?
Just a thought for now guys.
Thank you ALL.
I still love you all!

Don't count your chickens before they hatch.
Please, switch hobbies. You really don't seem to be a collector any who. Your constant bragadosa is nauseating.
Your whole approach of any thread started seems to be a contradiction to your sig line which I find offensive. It should be removed. Religion is cool, promoting one secular religion in a sig line is not.
Ask Jesus what to do I guess. The answer is right there.
Why bother those of us that are not interested in your supposed collecting issue. And I am fully aware that I did not need to click on this thread. I just wanted to see what train wreck from a hypocrite was on deck now.
Hi Joey,
Does this mean you finally got bored with roll searching?
Or more like you see cards as a way to make money?
Don't forget - the people who make those cards make a profit at it,
just like the people who run the casinos.
Have fun with it, but posting on Sports Cards in this U.S. Coins forum is definitely off topic,
so maybe check out that forum.

Whoa....
If sports cards don't work out for you, you can always try stamps.

@joeykoins, Be very careful. Played the baseball rookie speculation game in the mid-90’s. Ben Greive, Alex Rodriguez, Andy Pettit, Derek Jeter and a whole host of other potential prospects. Pretty much lost my shirt on most of them as they never panned out and the market collapsed. It’s hot now but can’t last forever- best of luck to you. Oh yeah and most boxes just contain crappy common cards no one wants!
I love you, too!

Just might make it a quick flip of my current cards I have.

Then, bank all the profits.
Nice cash total!.

Think like a day trader. Take your profits quickly and be prepared to bail out even more quickly when the signs of a downturn appear. Don't wait until the last second to bail out. They are essentially "made for collector/speculator" material.
That!
Segway into whatever hobby/hustle interests you, Joey!

Great idea! Can I have your coins now?

I never collected sports cards. I did win 150,000 of them by throwing a bid in on the lot. Paid $500 for the lot and $800 for the shipping.
I thought I struck it rich LOL
149,250 of them I couldn't give away, literally. The Salvation Army took them and gave me a very nice donation value for taxes.
The stuff I had from the early 60's and 70's did very well.
The best cards of the group were the "Garbage Pail Kids".
I know this is off topic so I will shut up now.
Now I hear the new cards are like crack. Once you get in you need a 12 step program to stop.
Same as coins.

Old lady at the bingo hall told me Beanie Babies are about to make a comeback, that's where the real money is at.
“Segue is sometimes confused with Segway. Segue is a verb that means "to move without stopping from one topic, song, etc., to another." Segway, on the other hand, is a trademarked name for an electric transportation device.”

@joeykoins - It's not going to work. You can't find sports cards at banks! 🤣

Why don't you go hang out on the music thread and leave us REAL collectors alone.

@JoeyCoins I just noticed that you have 15,000+ posts. Are they all posts from the coin forum?

Joey, I wish you enjoyment in your collecting and speculating.
And I’ll add this caution - don’t assume that you’ll be able to sell cards at published prices or even close to them.
Often, when discussing your coins, you mentioned price guide values, which were much higher than actual sold prices. I’m concerned that you’re expecting to get a lot more for your cards than you’ll be able to.
Best of luck.

I agree, you should do both. Coins are just my latest collecting area. Martin D guitars from the 1940s-1950s, Fenders from the late 50s-60s, Gibson Les Pauls from 1958-65, and Gibson Banjos from 1927-1945 will always be my first love. They take up much more room than coins, but give me much more of a creative outlet once I have them.
@fox9487 - maybe you need a Snicker's Bar? Nothing about Joey is very braggadocios. He is an even keel dude, and likes sharing his style of collecting. His style and mine are not the same, but that's what makes the hobby fun... right? I really don't understand the unprovoked attack.
I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.
Joey, please don't take this as an insult, especially since it applies in one form or another to many/most of us here, but I think you are an addict. In your case, you seem to be addicted to the thrill of the hunt, looking for the next big score, etc. And when you do find that special item you seem to be willing or anxious to flip it for cash to keep the cycle going.
I'm not sensing much of a traditional "collector" mentality. Your approach seems to really be about looking for stuff that other people collect or will pay money for. That's not necessarily a bad thing, since it means you are not chained to an ever-growing collection of stuff. You can just enjoy the hunt.
If I was going to play the sports card game, especially with vintage cards, I'd combine it with autograph collecting - send the notable common cards to retired players to sign.
One last thing....there is a suspicion that you tend to count your wins but not your losses. With manufactured collectibles like modern sports cards you would need to be especially careful since the "value" is often contrived and not easily realized if you go to sell.
But, above all, have fun!
I don't understand the attraction of sports cards (at all... it baffles me) but you seem to love the thrill of the hunt and sports card packs offer that in spades. You might even say they were designed specifically for people like you. That's not a dig, if that's your thing then go for it!
I feel like a lot of modern cards are often produced in high numbers, saved in high grades, and at least currently in high demand. If demand jumps ship, watch out.
Will you change your name to joeykards? Good luck whatever you want to collect, even if they are pogs.
Was wondering when you were going to chime in?

You should get out of numismatics as trying to make a fast buck speculating on coins is not going to work out for you, me, or anyone else. I’m not in it to make money but to enjoy the history of the coin/series. That said, buying solid, above average coins that I like will most likely be treasured by another collector down the road.
Your idea of pursuing modern cards is akin to buying modern coins. The overall population printed/minted is massive compared to early material. How many people are out there that will jump through hoops to buy a LeBron James card, a 1977 quarter in MS-65, or a Poor-1 clad 40% Kennedy? What happens if Caitlin Clark blows out her knee?
Best of luck.
As the tired saying goes, you do you.
+1 on move it to the sport card forum
Like all the David Wrights I had. 🤦♂️
Oh boy, what coulda been. He was a hell of a ball player.
Anyways, do what your heart tells you to do Joey. One little thing, this morning I was at 7/11 grabbing a pack of cancer sticks and I noticed all the cards, sports and Pokémon, they had for sale. They also sold the plastic inserts, soft and hard, and pages. I immediately thought, wow, if only they had something like this for coins…..
No wonder the card market keeps expanding. The proliferation is massive and for a few bucks you can satiate your desire to engage with the hobby almost 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, physically in person. I cannot see where that sort of market could exist with coins. However, that’s likely for the best.
Having fun while switching things up and focusing on a next level PCGS slabbed 1950+ type set, while still looking for great examples for the 7070.
I was born in the late 70’s. The late eighties and early 90’s were INSANE for cards. Canseco, McGwire, Ripken, Mattingly, the 85 Topps set, the Topps Traded sets….. I watched neighbors back on Long Island, (where I grew up), lose their houses when it all came crumbling down almost overnight. I had to watch my friends move away into Grandmas’ houses. Some to God knows where. Our street hockey team went from 3 lines to not enough guys to play the next complex over. 😢

There is nothing wrong with differences of opinions. No need to scold someone and have them leave because you don't agree with what they stated.
If you start a thread- be prepared for opposing opinions.
I predict one day we will ALL be tired of this current "woke" mentality.

Sports cards is the equivalent of day trading. Have fun.
Fun Part
Adding up all my inventory. Coins/currency/sport cards.
To calculate what total in cash it may bring. As of right now!
The 4 PSA/BGS Graded Caitlin's alone comes to approximately $600

Please only remember my opening Sig Line.I think taking a break from one hobby that i’m jaded with and focusing on another for a while is a good thing. But no real need to quit forever for any of my hobbies. Also, temporarily changing focus within the same hobby does the same thing, keeps things fresh. I like to do this if/when I feel like I’m in a rut. Not sure if this approach would work for you though.
Mr_Spud
My guess is that it wasn’t about a difference of opinion, but rather, the extremely rude delivery of it.

Yes, he certainly painted a picture.
I read it as colorful commentary and if aimed at me would not have taken offense.
Agree or not, it does take a certain wherewithall to post such and it is that I appaud.
So many are being cancelled these days for stating an opinion, of which I am hopeful many here would not support.

woe be unto …
I dont understand the negativity on this thread. Joey has been a great forum member over the years. So what if he counts the wins and not the losses. So what if he has a sig line thanking Jesus. So what if he is getting excited about sports cards, even selling his coins to have more funds to pursue them? So what if he likes to gamble on YouTube. He shares his wins, yes. But I've never seen him brag about it
Does any of that merit the insults some of you are lobbing at him? You ever see this guy being disrespectful to ANYONE here?
Joey, I say do what interests you and what makes you happy. It's not OUR money, and we don't get to tell you what is right and wrong. I've enjoyed your coin roll searching threads over the years and wish you well if you are moving on.
You may just wish to try a little of both. Good luck
