Hopefully you are not buying these Bust halves thinking you can get them into a straight graded PCGS holder. I can't tell what your collecting strategy is because your profile is marked "private."

Oh, I didn’t fill out a profile, but no I am not buying these halves thinking I can get them into PCGS, or even ANACS holders, much less problem free holders. I am trying to learn about grading and how some cleaning is tolerable on older coins though.
They aren’t really worth slabbing not being rare or expensive enough to warrant third party grading.
My focus is on historically interesting, budget oriented, and good value coins without a large markup. They don’t look bad in hand for what they are.

VF-30 to 35. It should never make EF-40, but these days …
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Bust halves are neat coins; but, they are no longer inexpensive. Being as you say, "Historically interesting," I expect their values will increase over time. You are looking at the prime grades of VF & EF and they warrant being in PCGS holders. There are too many unknowables with raw coins in those grades. A cleaned coin will become less desirable if the market continues to navigate to quality.
Obviously I'm biased; but, this is a PCGS forum. The one Bust half I bought years ago from a non collector for just a few dollars turned out to be a straight graded XF40 and that was just pure luck.

It's not really a "guess the grade" unless it's TPG certified. Otherwise it's more like "what do you think this grades".
You’re right
Good thing they asked "What would you grade this"

EF40 Details, if that's graffiti in the obv field. On a bad day I might call it a conservative 35.

I’m not quite seeing graffiti, just a couple of scratches.

Looks like a high VF, possibly XF, coin. It's darkly toned but I don't see anything in these images that would prevent a straight-grade.

maybe 35/40, thats just a guess
I feel it would grade as an XF40 as an O-106. Then that's just my opinion.
