Has Anyone Followed the Recently Discovered 1961 Wilt Chamberlain RC SGC-10…

This card was recently found in MN…whose family owned a small grocery store …sent to SGC and received a 10. A collector contacted SGC…and a private transaction for the card went down for $1.7 million.

Insane card, my understanding is it is the best known copy. The PSA 10s were graded ages ago.

As crazy as it sounds, I think $1.7 million is a bargain for that beauty.

"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

If I were the owner of this card…I would have consigned it to auction. I think it could have exceeded $1.7 million.

On item like that you can probably arrange for no fees plus 5% of the buyers fees.

Little more serious in Abingdon Va in 1987 there was a fella at a flea market who had RC's of Wilt, Kareem, Dr J. couple others. Nothing like the SGC 10 Wilt , well loved cards, but I still kinda kick myself for passing on them. :#

We've all done this a time or two. Would of,should of, could of. So you are not alone.

Saved how much on grading fees at $15 vs thousands for PSA?. Doesn’t seem like anyone cares it is in SGC. I am slabnostic but shocked at the strides SGC has made in postwar vintage. Cards in SGC holders were very prevalent at The National. First time in years half my buys were in SGC.

  • RufussCkingstonRufussCkingston Posts: 1,640 ✭✭✭✭✭

Grading fee should have been $3750 at SGC, not $15, but still cheaper than $8k at PSA.

  • brad31brad31 Posts: 2,778 ✭✭✭✭✭

My bad I was way off on the fee.

Kind of two different categories. You have iconic GOAT's like Jordan and Gretzky, which are more "recent". Then you have the iconic old cards of older superstars, like say Howe, Orr, West, Wilt, Russell, Mays, Mantle etc, which are way harder to come by, especially in top condition....

Wilt is the real "GOAT". At one time he held nearly every record like Gretzky and on many occasions Wilt "broke the game" that the rules had to be changed to "nerf" him (to borrow a couple of video game terms). For example, he caused offensive goaltending to be outlawed, widening the lane (for the second time), three second rule, and even banning trying to dunk a free throw...and Wilt wouldn't have needed a running start!

I've never seen a better Wilt Chamberlain and that includes modern cards. If there is still stack of these 61's at home, wow. But yeah, could you blame anyone for taking life-changing money up front? All debt paid off for two families right now. No waiting months and months.

And no risk of no payment and waiting longer like the ‘79 OPC Gretzky case. Didn’t follow that one to the end so maybe the guy decided to pay.

Ridiculous. Russell's rebounding was right there with Wilt's but Chamberlain scored TWICE AS MANY points per game.

I wouldn't call it ridiculous if you compare championships. In sports the number of titles is the ultimate goal. Just ask Charles Barkley or Patrick Ewing.

This is why I don't argue about what player is better, worse, etc... I just mentioned that you could make the argument, and there's enough THERE there to make a good argument.

At the end of the day I don't care either way, but I like that you can.

I joke around a lot but that is a seriously beautiful Wilt RC. SGC case makes it pop also.

    Sorry, there's not.

I can see arguing Jordan and to a lesser degree Bryant and James, but Russell didn't score enough to be in the GOAT discussion.

    GOAT? Greatest Of All sTatistics?

For individual statistical greatness Chamberlain stands alone.
As a Champion though, Russell. I can't see past 11 rings in 12 years.

I can see good arguments for both sides.

    Two totally separate comparisons.

    Chamberlain dwarfs Russell individually!

The other guys they played with means nothing in comparing the two players.

Celtics TEAMS were awesome, much better than most of the teams Wilt played on.

What if this was another Al Rosen situation where they found a full case(1952 Topps) and busted it all. But BK this time. I mean these look pack fresh like SGC said. I wonder how many cards where found.

Wow…will PSA cross recently SGC graded cards straight to PSA since the companies are now joined at the hip?

Glad they didn’t pull the we are the superior grading company it is a 9 crap. If that card is not a 10 then grades should stop at 9. Expensive to cross it over - think of total grading fees now that the mothership got paid for it to be graded by SGC and then by PSA. This has to be their ideal scenario.

Be nice if the SGC slab could have the PSA flip. A possible and IMHO great cross-over promotion option now that its possible to offer one.
