Attribution should have caught this one; "copy" based on the 1833 N-5 large cent. I have written a number of Coin Week articles on this "family" of fakes.
They used a genuine 1833 to create the dies and then drop in different dates to create a whole series...

Those pictures are darkish and kind of small.
But here are larger pictures. Then I turned up the exposure (a lot) and tweaked some to make them more 'visible'.
Don't know if this helps anything because I don't know what I am looking for. Any links or things to point out?

messed up line spacing on label... photos of coin in slab:
foreign office graded
wonder which one certified it
any the foreign office has better white balance that the home office, but the photog should know that's way too dark. a better photo would make it easier for those less photo editing skilled

Does not attribute as a genuine 1817 variety; "Pit" on bust is diagnostic as well as wrong profile and the wrong reverse for the date. Image on the right is a genuine 13 stars 1817:
a lead in:
indian head cents have known, but limited die varieties and metal changes excluding rpd / ddo etc. there are differences in numbers "pointed bust", etc.
a) bu there are still impossibilities; 1860 L on Ribbon
cutting to the chase:
b) for which series of coins is a deep attribution a must to verify against counterfeits?
.
Thanks for the link.
I had your overall one bookmarked (below) but quite a few to scan through to find this one.

That counterfeit would be good enough to fool all but the specialists in the series. I wonder how many more of them are already in someone's collection? I'm sure the counterfeiter made more than one.
Every series I have researched for counterfeits...
As an example, I joined LSCC for help on a classic counterfeit 1872-S half dollar and they had the attribution book to help prove it a fake.
I am glad you and in the numismatic community. The great work you, and how much I have learned from you cannot be overstated.
I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.
Coin Week article hit; I noticed the cert was nuked...
