Donkey and Goat Coins, Medals, and Tokens?

There’s been some recent conversation about whether medals and tokens should have their own category—separate from coins—in the Collectors Universe forums. I like having them all combined together. If you collect coins long enough you get to know all the familiar designs and themes. I’m not saying modern Lincoln cents get boring. . . . but with “exonumia” (medals and tokens) you can mix a lot of variety into your collection.

Medals and tokens are great for building a nice topical collection—an organized grouping of material around a theme of personal interest. I’ve had beagles as pets for more than twenty years, and I’ve assembled a collection of hound-related vintage postcards, along with old medals.

A couple years ago I joined the board of directors of Brayhope Farm, Inc., a charitable nonprofit that offers community health and educational programs for autistic kids and others with physical, developmental, behavioral/emotional, and other sensory needs. How do they do it? By connecting people with miniature Mediterranean donkeys, miniature mules, and dwarf goats! It’s amazing to watch the therapeutic effect of these sweet little animals.

Naturally, it’s inspired me to start another collection.

Who’s got donkey-, mule-, and/or goat-related coins, tokens, and medals? I’m curious to see what’s out there in the numismatic world.

Some of the design candidates for New York State’s 2021 American Innovation dollar featured mules pulling a boat along the Erie Canal.
