Donkey and Goat Coins, Medals, and Tokens?
There’s been some recent conversation about whether medals and tokens should have their own category—separate from coins—in the Collectors Universe forums. I like having them all combined together. If you collect coins long enough you get to know all the familiar designs and themes. I’m not saying modern Lincoln cents get boring. . . . but with “exonumia” (medals and tokens) you can mix a lot of variety into your collection.
Medals and tokens are great for building a nice topical collection—an organized grouping of material around a theme of personal interest. I’ve had beagles as pets for more than twenty years, and I’ve assembled a collection of hound-related vintage postcards, along with old medals.
A couple years ago I joined the board of directors of Brayhope Farm, Inc., a charitable nonprofit that offers community health and educational programs for autistic kids and others with physical, developmental, behavioral/emotional, and other sensory needs. How do they do it? By connecting people with miniature Mediterranean donkeys, miniature mules, and dwarf goats! It’s amazing to watch the therapeutic effect of these sweet little animals.
Naturally, it’s inspired me to start another collection.
Who’s got donkey-, mule-, and/or goat-related coins, tokens, and medals? I’m curious to see what’s out there in the numismatic world.

This was one of several design candidates for the Merrill’s Marauders Congressional Gold Medal that showed the pack mules that helped the unit in its military actions.

Some of the design candidates for New York State’s 2021 American Innovation dollar featured mules pulling a boat along the Erie Canal.

Cool tokens and medals. I don’t have any other donkey or goat coins except a circulated version of the Roman Firmness Hard Times Token.

I looked again, I think this one has a Pack Mule on it

There are some cool golf tokens depicting goats on them. Unfortunately, I don't have any pics! Here are a few others:

From the 1948 presidential campaign.
This unusual piece in leather celebrated Grover Cleveland's presidential victory in 1884. It was the first presidential elections the Democrats had won since 1857. DeWitt attributed the piece to the 1888 campaign.
There are dozens and dozens of goat medals from golf and tennis clubs from the 1930's and before -- I will add some images when my fiber optic line is finally repaired. It's not easy to run an internet business from the public library...
