1968 US Proof Set

The 1968 quarter in one of my set looks different than the others , it appears to have a matte finish

I believe the OP is referring to the cameo contrast.

Yep, nice cameo contrast. Deep mirrors and frost on the devices. How does the reverse look?

    Could be.

  • Not as defined on the back but l

  • Should I grade the quarter or just keep it in the proof set as is?

Please don't post photos of screens. The pixelization makes it impossible to understand what we are seeing and many people just skip threads with them.

I don’t know much about PR sets, but aren’t 1968 (& other years) proofs minted in SF? Maybe I’m mistaken. If not, you have a mint set. In either case, not worth submitting, imo.

Proofs have been minted in San Francisco since 1968. It appears you are not seeing all of his photos. The set is a proof set and the coins have S mint marks.

Nice cameo but not likely worth the cost of grading.

If the OP's 1968 Proof quarter looked like this one:

it may be worthwhile to have it graded.

However it does not (it is a one sided Cameo coin that may be worth $2-3 dollars) so submitting it for grading is not warranted.

Proof coins with frosted devices and mirrored fields are called cameo Proofs. Today all Proof coins are made a cameo pieces, but 30 years ago, they were unusual and more valuable.

The obverse of your quarter appears to be cameo, but the reverse does not. Unfortunately one sided Cameos are not worth a premium. It has to be on both sides.

These coins are created by new dies or Proof dies that have been re-polished. The frost wears off from the friction that occurs when the coins are struck. It’s pretty much gone after the first 10 or so coins are struck.

    Not worth submitting for grading.

The reverse holds it back from a cameo designation - not worth the grading fees.

Just to throw it out there.

Wrong reverse type. The OP coin has a Type H reverse. The DDR is on a Type G reverse. A very difficult variety for a newbie to look for, in any case.
