Which 1889 CC Morgan?

Without looking up each, which one doesn't grade a 63+ and what's holding it back from grading a 63+? Which one would you prefer to own given a choice?

Interesting thread. I like both. Personally, I like #1, but I’m a toner guy. I was told in the past by Morgan dealers that collectors prefer white for the 89-CC. That’s the one I would pick if I’m looking ahead to sell in the future.
But I think it’s the one that’s not 63+ due to the cheek - more noise than #1. JMO.

Top didn't grade higher due to small rim issues. Just my guess.
I would prefer the bottom coin myself, graded higher or not, since to me the colors clash together in a way that I do not prefer. If it was way cheaper, then I would budge.
Edit: the color might be from the trueview, and look different in person.

Wow, no loser there. I like the toned coin but seems like the bottom coin has better strike and reverse.
Kinda splitting hairs when it comes to same grade and only a plus + difference.
Either coin could get a plus or not get a plus on any given day.
My guess would be the top one got the plus and I like it a little more than the other.
2 got the plus. #1 has too much going on around the ear, cheek.

I prefer #2
I think #2 gets the +
BUT
I personally would take #1 based on the original-looking toning, no matter the grade (within reason)...

Wow. Very tough choice. I cannot make up my mind.
I like them both. I will PM you with the address to mail them to. LOL
2
I prefer the second. It looks healthier to me, jmo 🙂
I think #2 did not get the plus because it has more hits/scuffs on both Liberty's face and on the Eagle.
1 has better eye appeal and character; the second looks to have stacking or other prior friction. (edit: why did my comment get doubled in size?)
I like the color and the strike on #1 better

No idea which one grades better, as I can't tell an MS 61 from a MS64, let alone a plus. LOL! I got an 1889-CC XF45 CAC in the mail today, and that's about the top of my budget for that particular coin, so a MS would be a dream. LOL!
That said, I like the second one better as far as pics go.

I don't like toning which is an altered surface. I like the original surfaces of #2 and the surface preservation of #2 is better anyway. #1 photo looks OK but I bet in hand it's not so pretty. I'd take #2 all day.
Edited to add:
I looked up the registrations and got to see bigger/better photos. With a better photo I can see that #2 is not as clean as I originally thought; however, it is really nice for the grade it was given. Conversely, #1 does look better than I originally thought as far as surface preservation.
The first coin came out of an ANACS holder (has to be the same coin). A few plus years ago (at FUN as I recall) a dealer came back with an 89cc toned in ANACS holder. Therefore may have bought at a 'good' price. He thought it had a shot at an upgrade and/or PL as I recall. I was so so on that but I am not a fan of the toning sooo... Looks like he was correct. As best I remember the coin looks better than the TV makes it out to be.

1 looks like it is cleaner and the higher graded of the 2.
I dont like its toning, i would buy #2 because it matches my set better.
Agree, not even close. Better luster, better fields, much better eye appeal
I like them both for different reasons.
Number 1. Pluses are awarded for eye appeal, and it has it in spades IMO...
