Hi Folks,
I wanted to start a separate thread for this last post on the ANA show. In summary, it was a great show for me and an excellent learning experience. Friday was not as busy as the last 3 days but still did some buying and selling. I am just going to do this with bullet points about some of my experiences then a few NEWPs below.

  • I had the pleasure of having a table right next to David Kahn and Brian Greer, two legends of numismatics. Also at their extended table was Melissa Kahn and Dick Graham. All 4 were great to have right there for 8-10 hours a day. I had extensive conversations with David, Dick and Brian about various aspects of numismatics, dealing, how to value your offerings, and discussions of coins at their tables and mine. I ended up buying 2 seated quarters from the special collection David was offering (below). Even if I had had a bad show, this would have made the show for me.

  • I think my favorite sell of the whole show was the following. A gentleman and his young son (I thought he was 7 but found out he was 11, boy am I out of touch), came up to my table mid-day Friday. The boy looked at my 2 cases and ended up panning over to my bust quarters. Then his eyes opened wide and he drew in a large breath. He pointed right to one of my 2 remaining draped bust quarters and said "Look at this one Dad!" The coin in question, was my 1806 B9 PCGS-VF20/CAC with rich patina in shades of dark olive, gray cloud, and a hint of khaki all melded together. Frankly it was my favorite and best priced draped bust quarter and I wondered why the heck it was still sitting there after 4 similar (but just a tinch less attractive IMO and more expensive in VF) had already sold. The father said something like, well you already got your bust dollar and half here, and this one matches, but there is gonna have to be something go if you really want it. Son said something like yes it is perfect let's get it. So father says okay, you are going to have to sell some of your gold. Then he asked me if I took bullion gold coins which I did not. Father says no worries he knows where to go. We then discussed price, the father let his son do the negotiations - offered a bit less than the pricing on the sticker on the back and I countered and then we all shook hands. Father and son go off to sell their gold - probably 1 bullion double eagle, and come back in a few minutes to pay up. But here is the kicker, once the deal was done, the son laid out his 1799 dollar in VF and his 1805 (IIRC), in F next to the new VF quarter and dang is they weren't a perfect consistent set in terms of look. And that was all purchased Friday. I gave the son a bonus coin - a raw AU half cent that was in an AU detail ANACS small holder back in the day. I made the decision earlier that I would give this to the first pre-18 aged YN that bought a coin from me. I don't sell that kind of coin but it is still a nice learning piece.

  • The table across from me, one of the members here @Kliao, was working at it. He is colleged-aged and works for that dealer when he has time. We had some great conversations, I loved his enthusiasm, he manned my table when I need a nature break, and all in all was fun to meet and discuss coins with him.

  • Sir Messy (@messydesk) came by on Friday to say hi and discuss at the same time I had a lull. He stayed for a while. We discussed things like best value for mailing coins, attributions, his prime set, etc. etc. I believe we were at it for 45 minutes when a 'guy' named John Butler came up to the table to talk to Sir Messy about an appointment they had later on. He started looking at my inventory and said 'you have a lot of nice CAC and CACG coins there' or something like that. Once he mentioned that the squirrel running my brain knocked on my skull to wake me up and I thought oh, that is John Butler, one of the CACG graders. Along with Sir Messy we had another good 20 minutes of conversation about coins. John is a really nice guy and very relaxed. I always had a vision of a world class grader as deep and intense and someone who would not dare interact with the proletariat. So I had one of the best photographers and one of the best graders in the numismatic world at my table at the same time. Is that cool or what.

  • Alot of dealers came up to my table to look at inventory. They were unanimous in compliments about the quality of what I was selling and one even said there are not too many tables that have this level of quality across their cases (thanks BTW). Several I was able to reach deals with but honestly since I am selling at retail, we all knew it would be hard to have alot of through put between us. I try to leave room in my offers to dealers but margins are tight for everyone. But we all had alot of discussion and I think I was able to begin to establish what my approach is going to be, and also some very solid connections were made.

  • Quite a few PCGS message board members came by and some bought coins from me. It was very nice to see all of them. Thanks for all of you coming by folks.

Okay I am running out of steam here even though I could write more. So I am just going to show some coins I picked up. We can go in order earliest to latest for date minted.

I have never owned a colonial and this one seemed very cool in terms of price and great surfaces as I thought all colonials in high grades cost Moon money and this one did not. And it is from a famous collection that was auctioned off recently so the label says. Sure I have heard of Hibernia colonials and this is one of them but really I have no clue. Now I have to learn more about this cool colonial............

This one caught my eye - I am occasionally getting GB coins - shillings, half pennies and pennies. I always wanted a big one from the time of Conder tokens. But all I have seen in affordable grades just did not do it for me. This one met my expectations.

On Wednesday David Kahn brought out a set of stunning seated quarters, the PNW collection. It was clear that the consignor had high expectation on quality and spent many years carefully choosing which ones to get for his set - original surfaces and super strong for the grade. I like O mint quarters and managed to pick up two:

.

Finally, I had the fortune to pick up a handful of gorgeous Indian half eagles. This was the best. This is a total Wow coin (and be forewarned priced as such). What is not to love? Rich tone, well struck, OGH, CAC. Okay a very very small grease spot on the cheek but not detracting. Still, I just love this coin and many an eye roved straight to it in my case.

Folks thanks for reading my ANA show reports!

Best, SH
