Middle Date Large Cent, GTG if you want - Posted

Purchased awhile ago but “forgotten” about until the other day when I came across it while looking for another cent in my collection.
It’s the somewhat better Medium Letter Redbook variety; still an R1, but checking the pops, it’s considerably scarcer than its Large Lettered brother, especially in the upper grades.

Feel free to guess what PCGS said about it. Any scratches are on the holder, not the coin:

I’m not great at early copper since it can be difficult to judge luster from photos, but I will guess 58.

Very nice coin. I like it at 2/3 but higher would not surprise me. Luster in hand?

Thanks. Luster is somewhat accurate in the pics. I’d say it’s decent (for what it is), but certainly not booming/great cartwheels, etc.

Nice Copper, Greg. Is it an N-3? Not the greatest on the Coronet Head Cents, not even sure I like the name. lol. I believe it would grade MS63. Thanks for sharing.

MS-62 slab grade. Probably a classic AU-58 if the dark place on the cheek is a rub.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • If I straight grade it, It's a 58. What gen slab is it?

I'm thinking 58 with nice luster... beautiful.

Terrific looking coin - I would say 58 but it could be a 63 depending if there is a rub on the cheek or not. Can't tell from the picture.

Great point, Bill, thanks for bringing this up (along with EastonCollection), as I wanted to discuss and compare this with another cent I own. Will post the grade shortly.

    au55

  • Walkerguy21DWalkerguy21D Posts: 11,444 ✭✭✭✭✭

AU 55 is correct, albeit a bit harsh, IMO.
Slab image added to original post.
But I was the beneficiary, not the submitter.
I believe it’s a lock 58 coin, and if some tlc could reveal more of the luster, certainly a shot 62.

Regarding the dark area on the cheek, I personally have trouble in this case discerning rub from long term envelope storage (assuming this caused the darkness on both).

Here’s a comparison between two of my cents.

    A very nice 55 indeed.

  • lkeneficlkenefic Posts: 8,160 ✭✭✭✭✭

I agree.. 55 seems a bit harsh. FWIW... I couldn't tell AU vs MS because of the cheek and a static image. The reverse looks MS to me and knowing how hard PCGS has been on copper recently, I went with the higher AU grade.

...why doesn't anything like that "turn up" in MY safe?!!

Seriously thinking about sending it in for reconsideration. It’s definitely nicer than my other PCGS 55’s. Even a bump to 58 would be worthwhile.
