Has this coin been dipped?

NeophyteNumismatistNeophyteNumismatist Posts: 1,073 ✭✭✭✭✭

My usual morning routine of looking at coins on eBay. I came across this one in PCGS64CAC. When I look at this coin, it looks as though it has been held on the right side of the coin and dipped. You can see where the coin is clearly more brown on that side. I would never buy this coin for that reason, but am I looking at this wrong?

What do you think?

I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.

I would agree that I would not buy it based upon eye appeal, but also agree also that it is most likely just due to its storage over time.

Yep. Chalk one more up to not dipped. Looks original from the images.

That's from storage so far as I can tell. Looks like the coin may have slid partially out of an envelope of some kind, had a slide partially open in an album (this make the most sense to my mind), or been mostly covered with a piece of paper or something for a while. Hence the straight line toning discrepancy.

Eye appeal, at least to me, is not as bad as some may say. The toning isn't positive, but I don't view it as a hard negative either.

What would one use to dip a copper coin?

Doesn't look dipped to me from the photos, and while that look would not be a look I would gravitate towards mid twenties branch mint Lincolns are tough to find with full strikes and eye appeal.

Kind of looks like it was taped into a book at one time (not oriented correctly). Toned outside of tape and then acetoned to remove any tape residue.
Not my cup of tea but at the right price?

I agree with @AUandAG . As a kid I bought blue folders with coins in them from other kids. I have at least a dozen coins with this type of toning. they must have taped them in because they kept falling out. James

Thanks. No interest in the coin, but very curious.
