Seems a bit tough of NGC to put that in a details holder.

Here is one with similar slide marks that graded 65. Yes, they are less pronounced than yours but slide marks nonetheless.

Those look like scratches, as opposed to slide marks, to me.

can't slide marks cause scratches if the slide is opened and closed enough times? (With the help of sand or dirt, etc.)

I don’t know but I don’t recall having seen slide marks that looked like that. I also give the benefit of the doubt to NGC, who’s seen plenty of slide marks and examined the coin in hand.

Here's a short gif of the Obverse (it's not great but it'll do for now)

When I tried to give a grade based on the Tru-view that you posted I saw it as a 62; however, after seeing the larger pics posted here after your reveal I believe the details grade is certainly warranted.

The scratches look much worse in the slab shot pic. I can now see why it got a details grade. Still a decent coin if you got it for the right price.

Some times they just don’t like a coin and find a reason, the surfaces alone preclude a straight grade (imho) but they didn’t want to call it altered. Marks work well enough without getting political. Wasn’t good enough for the 62 net it might have gotten in the 90s

Are the vertical (approximately) striations in the fields in front and behind Liberty suggestive of cleaning?

No, as those are Die file lines

That 09-S appears to have a mix of die polishing lines and metal flow markings so no. It does not look cleaned from the photo.
