Mint silver proof sets going up in price

WALLEWALLE Posts: 247 ✭✭✭✭

With the increase of the silver proof set (to $150 i hear) in the future, will you continue to buy these? As much as I hate to pay that much, I will continue as I need all of them for my albums. What are your thoughts.

I have been buying them to keep my string going from 1936. Compared to the cost of the 1936 set and the other older sets, $150 is not that much.

The thing that fries my bacon is the fact that the sets should be perfect at that price. I'm not saying PR-70, but they should be PR-69. The one I got has a mark on the half dollar on the reverse that would take it down to PR-67 and a brown spot on the cent. I'll have to trade that one in with my local dealer at minor cost.

Given the high prices that mint charges, their product should be better.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Unfortunately I have 3 sets of moderns from cents to halves which I will not stop. Not happy about the increase, Fortunately I ordered my silver proof sets the 1st day of release

I think if this price keeps going up, the price of your silver proof sets will keep going up.

I quit buying most of the modern mint products as prices and mintages crept up. I'm very selective what I purchase from there nowadays.

    Maybe. Maybe not.

At $31.05, a silver proof set that they will be selling for $150 will have exactly $45.74 worth of silver in it. I think they'll have quite a way to go from $31.05 before they'll need to reprice.

Even at $50 silver, it will only have $73.65 worth of precious metal. I don't think they'd actually do another repricing until silver got close to, or above, that level. JMHO.

Agreed! Getting pricey. Buying basically out of habit.

Not too thrilled about the quarter designs. Just can’t get excited about them. They just come as part of a set.

I'll wait till I find them in circulation, before I ever buy them from the mint. 😉

I hope so. I started collecting the silver sets in 99' when the SH Qtrs came out. I quit when the prices went up in 21'. I'll probably just sell my sets as I'll never be able to catch up with these prices anymore.
