Check Your 1971-D Kennedy Halves.

OAKSTAROAKSTAR Posts: 7,214 ✭✭✭✭✭

Been looking for silver, DDO's and No FG's lately. I found this die gouge going through the G in FG. It's no big deal or major error but it's interesting. I've looked at a lot of Kennedy's and haven't seen one of these before. Anyone else have one?

This one on eBay looked like it might be a “Speared G” variety. Hard to tell from the pics. https://www.ebay.com/itm/276499169531?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=IMOkZcQnTdi&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=CucZDCgqRD-&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

I used this as an excuse to upgrade my 71-D… so I’ll let you know when it arrives if it really is this variety.

Nice find OAKSTAR... thanks for giving us the heads up! Probably pretty scarce, since many have been checked for no FG, etc., and no mention of any die gouges before.

Not really trying to market it. Just thought it was an interesting anomaly.

Great!! It sure looks like something is going on there. Someone will have to get it attributed as a new variety.

I have one in the same area going from the F up into the leg of the eagle. I will try to find it and post a photo as soon as I can.
Edit: photos, not the best but I found it. Mine is a 1972 D Kennedy Half.

72-D's don't count! Only 71-D's. Just kidding, just kidding.

    That's also odd. Good eye!

    You’re gonna be famous :D:D:D

I just finished going through rolls from the bank and was lucky 🍀 to find my first no “FG”! I would’ve seen this gouge because I was focused in this area, among others. Maybe ya got a really rare one!

    Nice find!

@Oakster Congrats, you get to give it a catchy name. That is one strong gouge! Good eye.

    Good eye, that’s really cool!
Did Russ “discover” the AH Kennedy? If so, possibly another cool Kennedy discovery on this board.
    Congrats

Been checking all the 71-D's on eBay the past few days. Haven't seen any others yet. Not all the listed pictures are the best.

@oakstar I’ve been checking off and on, too, but have not seen any others yet.

I was also checking the GC sold listings and got excited because I thought I found another. But then I realized that it’s the same one that I got on eBay… the cert number matched mine!

Do you know how to get a die variety like this officially recognized? I don’t know much about this part of collecting. I’ve been learning about Peace Dollar VAMs. Is there something similar for Kennedy Halves?

I don't believe something like this needs to be attributed, given a name or officially recognized. Just like a common clipped planchet, a die crack, a struck thru or a die clash, a TPG'er can call it just a die gouge,
