Show me the most hated coin in your collection & why

The seller inherited a complete Walker set in a Whitman album and I either buy the whole album or none. It was an all or none deal.

I certainly don't "hate" any of my coins. But this one taught me a lesson: I don't like extremely worn coins. This caused me to wait years to buy my last Morgan dollar (1893-S, in VF25, which was high enough that I like it), and it has caused me not yet to have bought my last SLQ (1916). My feelings about it were improved ever-so-slightly when I recently submitted it to CAC, and it stickered.

    Tough choice.

I'll go with this "EF48," to quote the seller. A very bad eBay sale. The only negative I have ever given an eBay seller. He ships the coin via registered mail, it takes over three weeks to travel 400 miles, and then he won't accept a return because I took too long to contact him. I turned down a $100 bribe for a favorable review just to Neg him. Oh, did he squeal like a pig.

And with an ugly Trueview as well.

And here's something to cover it with.

As a long time type collector, the one series I really don't like are the With Arrows coins from 1873-4. They are expensive, and there is not much a story behind them.

When I was on the home stretch to completing my type set, I bought this dime to fill the hole. I was looking to buy Proof coins at the time, and for whatever reason, dealers where asking big prices for them. This thing has too many hairlines, and I don't care for it. It was a bad purchase on multiple levels.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

That’s a great looking well circulated worn key date coin.

I should say that even tho I am of the Jewish faith I like the coin very much. Gorgeous toning, beautiful design, obviously historic. Admittedly it affected my family in the most negative way imaginable ,but I am able to put that fact aside and appreciate different coins of different nations and eras and appreciate the coin's attributes. One can say I also enjoy Roman coins and they didn't tree the Jewish people much better than the Germans

It’s a neat looking coin of historical significance but looking at it makes me want to puke.

I spent some time this weekend explaining to my youngest how my grandparents' unspeakable experiences in the Holocaust still affects her and who she is as a person. Not exactly a fun topic.

I got this after living in Germany as a soldier. I liked it as it reminded me why I was there and as an artifact of that era with proofs being pretty rare. Some people act like it is an endorsement or they just have a visceral reaction to a tangible link to that group. But I have had some strong reactions to it

I've never seen Third Reich coins flaunted in a way that would come across as an endorsement (the way modern-day scum may, for example, display flags, whether original or, much more likely, modern creations just to show off symbology). With that said, I think there's value in being stewards of history to remember this very dark period in history did indeed occur.

On a slightly lighter note, a number of years ago a consignor asked me if I'd be comfortable selling a few Third Reich pieces, being kind and sensitive to why I might want nothing to do with them. I replied with the above thoughts, as well as noting that it would give me great pleasure to think about Hitler finding out a Jew was profiting off of his coins.

I agree with you, I think it is mostly a few people are just taken aback anytime they see a swastika and then project their conflicting thoughts onto the situation because they have no where else to go. I don’t view them different than any war relic, I have some confederate items as well and if anything they are a celebration of the victor’s triumph that these small widgets are all that are left such causes.

I bought this first example I saw of this scarce variety, with a "shattered reverse", which is hard to see in the photo.

But then a better one appeared...

This is such an odd thread because I don't understand why one would keep a "hated" coin in one's collection. I didn't think it would get much response but here we are!

There are a few interesting pieces in people's collections for sure.

Below is a photo of a coin in my collection that I hate.

Well, "hate" is a strong word. I don't hate the coin I posted above. But I certainly wouldn't have bought it if I thought I'd soon find the better one.

Needs no explanation why I hate it. Still have it,and need to dump it eventually. But bought an original PCGS XF40 CAC last year that is perfect. Bothered me looking at this coin and ruined by set. Bought on EBAY a long time ago with 'enhanced' photos. Took a long time replacing due to cost and crap on EBAY, tougher date to find nice ones.

No coin to post, but wanted to mention seeing the German coin above, that I also agree that they are part of history and history should be preserved for future generations to know what “happened”. With that said, I have only turned down handling two items in my dealer career. I don’t handle slave badges (the reason is I cannot profit off of something that was used to “profit” off a human being) and the other I was once asked if I could handle a frankly amazing KKK hand engraved Exonumia collection. KKK pieces are collected, and some of the early ones have very intricate hand engraving and such, but I refused to handle the collection based on I just think I couldn’t sleep at night profiting off of those items.

In NO way am I trying to start a debate here, so hopefully I didn’t just hijack this with responses, just wanted to mention that there are plenty of things to collect and, as a dealer, profit on. I just don’t deal in those two items.

Hate, is a powerful word. If I hate a coin in my collection I’d sell it.
    Carry on

I came across a kkk issued token in a lot of unidentified pieces that was in an estate I acquired. Had to research it on the internet as it was not obvious (to me) what it was. Wife wanted it out of the house asap.

Apart from that, I have coins I don’t love, but none I really hate.
