For those who like HIGH grade coins this one is a must. I'm sure is a bit out of my price range.
An MS68 1715 8 escudos... madness!

Wow! You’re right. An MS68 1700’s shipwreck coin, that’s nuts!
I'm BACK!!! Used to be Billet7 on the old forum.
OK… wow. Yeah, you’re right.
Amazing!!! Must be one of the most expensive coins from Mexico or at least in the top 5 will see what the auction closes at soon enough.
What is the current world record price for a Mexican coin is it the 1536 8 reales that sold over at HA for 528 000$?
Nice coin.

I’m no expert, but that’s insanely great.
You may indeed. But I’m 98% sure you will not win it.
well I may not... but I will run up increments anyways

Challenge... extended.
The last one sold was graded 62 and hammered at 250K euros. A 68 should bring a touch more.

This is one of those rare situations where you are safe putting a 200k bid in during pre-bidding with your wife watching and say "oops"

This doesn’t even seem real, I keep checking it thinking someone is gonna fess up and be like “yeah…we actually made a restrike!” 😂

I’d be happy to try that at $300k and still feel completely safe

Will see. Already at 260K + juice.
There are other great coins as well in this auction!

I’m excited to see what the 1734 8E in 64* and 1735 in 65+ sell for. My coin below is a 65 certainly on par with the coins at auction.

The catalog description of the 1715 tells how it was found on the beach after a storm. You have to wonder how many more lie below the ocean, just waiting to be found.

I suppose the short answer is no...
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
Lots but in MS68 I am not so sure.
You have to be skeptical of that story. The odds of a coin surviving a storm without any larger impact to the grade is almost nil.

Either this or the coin is overgraded at NGC .

The coin was struck in 1715. The ship went down in 1715. That doesn't prove there will be more, but it's encouraging. As for the grade, of the handful of other Royal 8's off the same wreck, NGC has graded two 67's, three 66's and three 65's. A 68 is certainly a good one, but it's hardly an outlier.

I meant lots of gold coins (from the New World) at the bottom of the ocean there were many shipwrecks. That is all I meant. And lots of silver coins as well in the ocean. Finding them is another matter and costly.
I looked at the coin yesterday. In terms of surface abrasions and friction of any sort, it's essentially perfect. The luster and color is slightly off, with is 100% typical for these coins. They spent hundreds of years underwater, so that can be expected and forgiven. And as much as I'd prefer a Royal 8 Escudos with better color and luster, which would mean one not from a shipwreck, you can't beat the history of a 1715!

When I saw the video of the coin I was in awe. But getting @MrEureka opinion of the coin is reassuring that I was not mistaken. Too bad will not be coming home.
It's not coming home with me either. Dan already called first dibs.

Of course I’m staying a block away in a cheap 3rd story Airbnb apartment so I can pass the savings along to my clients. And because I’m a cheap rat bastard, in case you haven’t noticed.

If the auction is in the same building as a Hermes, I guess that’s an ominous sign.
I’ll bet @bidask is at the Four Seasons. I’ll renew my bet he’s not coming home with the MS68 gold galano.
It's a very impressive building. I didn't have the nerve to walk in and explore tonight, at least not in my t-shirt, jeans, sandals and bright red touristy Toro cap that I picked up for 5 euros.

Fantastic looking coin! Good luck to the bidders.
Also, not meaning to change any direction to this tread, but if any of you have time the Casa de la Moneda Museum in Madrid at the Mint is the best numismatic museum I have even been to (and I have been to a few). I figured 1-2 hours when I went but spent 4-5 hours and still had more to see. It is free but take your passport or national identity card to get in. Right off a Metro stop.

Well, 630,000 Euro makes it officially the most expensive Mexican coin ever unless my memory fails.

So that is about 809 000$ US makes it a new world record for Mexican coins by a lot (over 285 000$ more than the 1538 8 reales that last sold at HA).
Does that include the buyer's premium?
It was about $809k including buyer’s premium. I’d guessed $800k all in.

Thanks I edited by above post to 809 000$.
If the coin is leaving the EU, there is a hefty Spanish export tax as well.
My computation of the export tax is €113,709.
So the total EUR cost is 630,000 hammer + 126,000 BP + 113,709 tax = 869,709 or roughly $931,039.
This doesn't include shipping nor insurance.
Quite a premium for a non-EU buyer.
Edited to add: I am figuring export tax only on the hammer price. If the tax computation includes the BP, it would even be more crazy.
And if I bought it, I’m legally responsible for paying use tax to my state, since there is no exemption for coins where I live.
So my cost would be $992,720. Almost a million dollar coin!
Dan was the twelfth underbidder twice removed.
In other words, he wasn't in the game as expected.
