For those who like HIGH grade coins this one is a must. I'm sure is a bit out of my price range.

An MS68 1715 8 escudos... madness!

What is the current world record price for a Mexican coin is it the 1536 8 reales that sold over at HA for 528 000$?

The last one sold was graded 62 and hammered at 250K euros. A 68 should bring a touch more. ;)

You have to be skeptical of that story. The odds of a coin surviving a storm without any larger impact to the grade is almost nil.

The coin was struck in 1715. The ship went down in 1715. That doesn't prove there will be more, but it's encouraging. As for the grade, of the handful of other Royal 8's off the same wreck, NGC has graded two 67's, three 66's and three 65's. A 68 is certainly a good one, but it's hardly an outlier.

I meant lots of gold coins (from the New World) at the bottom of the ocean there were many shipwrecks. That is all I meant. And lots of silver coins as well in the ocean. Finding them is another matter and costly.

If the auction is in the same building as a Hermes, I guess that’s an ominous sign.

I’ll bet @bidask is at the Four Seasons. I’ll renew my bet he’s not coming home with the MS68 gold galano.

It's a very impressive building. I didn't have the nerve to walk in and explore tonight, at least not in my t-shirt, jeans, sandals and bright red touristy Toro cap that I picked up for 5 euros.

So that is about 809 000$ US makes it a new world record for Mexican coins by a lot (over 285 000$ more than the 1538 8 reales that last sold at HA).

It was about $809k including buyer’s premium. I’d guessed $800k all in.

If the coin is leaving the EU, there is a hefty Spanish export tax as well.

My computation of the export tax is €113,709.

    So the total EUR cost is 630,000 hammer + 126,000 BP + 113,709 tax = 869,709 or roughly $931,039.
This doesn't include shipping nor insurance.

    Quite a premium for a non-EU buyer.

Edited to add: I am figuring export tax only on the hammer price. If the tax computation includes the BP, it would even be more crazy.

  • pruebaspruebas Posts: 4,517 ✭✭✭✭✭

And if I bought it, I’m legally responsible for paying use tax to my state, since there is no exemption for coins where I live.

So my cost would be $992,720. Almost a million dollar coin!
