Here are Rick’s words about receiving news of this honor for him:

Thank you to the ANA for selecting me as the 2024 recipient of the Harry J. Forman Dealer of the Year award!

This is quite an honor and I am very humbled and surprised by the award. The American Numismatic Association (ANA) is a great organization which I have been a member of since 1976.

In the past, they have bestowed on me:
Numismatist of the Year (2010)
Article of the Year (2014)
Presidential Award (2021)
and now:
Dealer of the Year (2024)

The award will be given at the Awards Banquet at the ANA World's Fair of Money, Chicago, IL on Thursday night August 8, 2024.

I hope you can attend.

Thank you very much.

Rick Snow

I’ve been waiting for this troll to post his negative garbage. He’s been banned several times (no need to wonder why), and pops up with a new “name”. Unfortunately, his reply may have to stay here until Tuesday before his reply is appropriately deleted!

His pictures of coins are among the very worst on the internet. My 12 year old does better with her phone.

His ads (like the one below) are full of hype, ABSOLUTE BALD FACED LIES and rooted in attempting to dupe the uneducated.

So oh yes, certainly deserving of dealer of the year. So f-ing disgusting!!!

What's worse is most of you yes-puppets here will bash me for posting PUBLICLY PUBLISHED DOCUMENTED TRUTH and the host will ban me for being honest and having the courage to call a spade a spade.

This is what the numismatic business has become. Corruption supporting corruption and collectors being stupid enough to follow along. Ya'll deserve a green bean on your foreheads.

It's also real nice how he manages to list the previous awards he's been given (far different than earned). No fragile little ego at play here!

And, above all else, what does this say about the ignorance and/or corruption of the ANA?

    Pathetic!

Congratulation to Rick. Love his books and everything I’ve bought from him and those coins I still own that were stickered by him. We may have plenty of stickers, but I welcome any specialist stickers on top of the generalists.

Rick certainly knows his stuff and is a successful dealer. As such the Eagle Eye Seal should and does carry a lot of weight. I am not sure what the ANA looks at when selecting the recipient of this award, but it should be acknowledged that there exists a potential conflict when you start stickering your own inventory.

I value the Eagle Eye sticker.

Potential conflict? Yes. But it boils down to the ethics of the person.

    1. My understanding is that Rick will ONLY buy coins for his inventory that he recognizes will merit his Photo Seal. Yes, he accepts coins for consignments from collectors that don’t have his PS.
    2. The vast majority of the Indian Cents in my #7 ranked set and my high ranked Flying Eagle sets were NOT bought from Rick, but were bought mainly from auctions and other dealers.
    3. Rick was courteous enough to have spent enough time with me to give me a good sense as to what it takes for a coin to merit his Photo Seal. EVERY coin I bought from auction or other dealers that did NOT have his Photo Seal at that time, when I shipped them to Rick, he stickered EVERY one, even though he knew I had only bought a very small handful of coins from him!

Based on the above, I’m convinced of two things: 1) Rick’s ethics will not allow him to Photo Seal a coin he buys for his inventory that does not merit a Photo Seal, and 2) Rick will not avoid Photo Sealing a coin that merits a PS simply because he’s not the seller!

So a potential conflict? Yes. But in the real world, he is 100% ethical with the application or rejection of his Photo Seal! And THAT is why his Photo Seal is so respected by those with serious collections of Flying Eagle and Indian Head cents!

    Steve

I appreciate the reply Steve. You always have some of the best and most well thought out comments (and coins!). I mean no disrespect to Rick. That is why I said 'potential' because no one can deny an opportunity does exist to take advantage. If he is indeed 100% ethical then we have nothing to worry about. If it is anything less than 100% though, I would have some serious concerns.

I certainly hope you are correct and that Rick doesn't let his own inventory or who is submitting have any factor in his decision to sticker.

@TrickleCharge: I can vouch for Steve’s analysis 100% with my own experience. At the Phoenix Money Show (March ‘23), I brought some 15 FE’s & IHC’s for Rick to examine for his PS. He approved most of them with a couple declines. Really good, I thought - 13/15. The next week after he was back at the office he called me to say he had changed his mind for 3 of them. Under the better lighting at his office was the reason. “I have to adhere to my strict standards instead of saving face”. I wasn’t even the slightest bit upset; I’ve dealt with him for many years & am aware he has exacting parameters for his PS. So, I ended up 10/15. A couple were a crap shoot on my part, so still a pretty good outcome.

Thanks for your very kind words. As noted, I agree.

Knowing other specific collectors and a vest pocket dealer who have had their cents purchased elsewhere and then stickered by Rick for their own collection (and in the case of the vest pocket dealer where the newly stickered coins are sold by him directly to collectors) gives me the solid confidence that I have regarding Rick’s ethical standards.

Keep in mind that Rick charges only $15 to Photo Seal a coin, regardless of value! For that measly $15, you get the sticker AND the plasticized Photo Seal card with the image of the obverse slab on the front of the card, and some language along with Rick’s signature on the reverse of the card, AND three high quality digital photos of your coin, AND if you request, he’ll discuss your coin with you! All for ONLY $15!

Why does he do that? I believe we can agree these $15 charges are not a moneymaker for him! He does this for the very reason he started with the Photo Seal concept about 30 years ago or so (the same reason that CAC started stickering about 14 years or so later) - he felt that many Flying Eagle and Indian Head cents were overgraded according to the theoretical grading standards. So he stickers coins that in his opinion are properly graded to identify those coins for the collecting community, whether they buy these coins from him, from an auction, or from other dealers. As noted in my earlier reply just a few replies above, he stickers plenty of coins that he has never sold!
